Shift Details

Shift: 7:00 PM - 7:00 AM

Unit Information

• Number of Beds: Unit 630 has 34 beds; Unit 633 has 25 beds
• Patient Ratios: 1:4 to 1:5 on days; 1:5 to 1:6 on nights
• Staffing: 3 technicians available when Unit 630 is full; 2 technicians available when Unit 633 is full
• Equipment: Bipaps, high flow oxygen, Vapotherm, Alaris pumps, cardiac drips, heparin drips, insulin drips, peritoneal dialysis, wound vacs in conjunction with wound care

Documentation & Scheduling

• Documentation System: Meditech
• Scheduling Requirements: Every other weekend commitment is required for contracts; 3 twelve-hour shifts per week
• Floating Policy: May require floating between PCU units or to medical-surgical floors

Patient Experience Requirements

• Hourly rounding on days; every 2-hour rounding on nights
• Utilization of the AIDET communication framework
• Maintenance of communication boards on the 7th floor
• Department 633 features TV communication boards

Certifications

• Required: BLS, ACLS

Requested Skill Set

• Must Have:
  
  
  • Critical thinking skills
  • EKG rhythm interpretation
  • Experience with cardiac drips, insulin drips, and heparin drips
  • Peripheral IV skills
• Preferred:
  
  
  • Peritoneal dialysis experience
  • Experience with bipaps, high flow oxygen, and multiple oxygen delivery systems
  • Experience with stroke and post-cardiac catheterization care
  • Experience with tube feedings and NG/dobhoff tubes

Procedures Performed on Unit

• Peritoneal dialysis
• Thoracentesis
• Paracentesis
• Chest tube insertions
• Dobhoff/NG tube insertions
• Central line dressing changes
• Troubleshooting wound vacs

Dress Code

Required Uniform: Black scrubs

Additional Information

The unit utilizes self-scheduling with schedules created for 4-week periods. Contracts require working every other weekend. The unit employs technicians to assist with patient care, fostering a culture of teamwork and a family-like atmosphere on the PCU. Most travelers choose to extend their assignments after the initial contract period.
