Job DescriptionPOSITION OVERVIEW
The Development Specialist is a unique opportunity for an entrepreneurial development professional to help build the infrastructure and research capability of PHI's Development department. The position will play a pivotal role in establishing systems, processes, and best practices that will support both PHI's fundraising and the fundraising success of our 40+ fiscally sponsored programs. The Development Specialist will also provide critical prospect research, grant writing and reporting, and funder/donor stewardship support.
This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a dynamic, fast-paced environment and wants to make a real impact by creating order from complexity. The Development Specialist will have the opportunity to design creative solutions and collaborate across teams to strengthen PHI's development capacity. This is a regular full-time, U.S.-based position. Candidates who can work a hybrid schedule of one day/week in the office in Oakland, CA are preferred. Strong candidates who can only work remotely are welcome to apply and will be considered.
The position may work during business hours for their time zone but should expect that some after-hour and/or weekend work may be required periodically. Limited travel for in-person retreats and meetings may be required as needed.

- Full salary range for this position: $86,029 to $127,149 per year. The hiring range for this position is from $86,029 to $100,000, based on 100% FTE. The starting salary is determined using a variety of factors, such as the candidate's knowledge, skills, and experience, as well as internal equity consideration and budget availability.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
Systems Building & Process Development
- Support design and implementation of department systems, workflows, and processes, including moves management, data management, and donor stewardship protocols
- Formalize internal department processes and establish best practices for cross-team collaboration with Programs and administrative departments including Bid & Proposal, Grants & Contracts, Office of Research & Agreement Administration, Finance, and Communications
- Manage backend financial platforms and liaise with administrative departments to troubleshoot
Grant Writing and Stewardship
- Write compelling grant proposals, letters of inquiry, and concept papers for PHI's fundraising priorities, including support for cross-departmental proposal development
- Prepare grant reports, budgets, and other funder-required documentation with precision and attention to detail
- Ensure donor acknowledgement and responsive service for PHI donors and funders
Prospect Research & Strategic Analysis
- Conduct regular comprehensive prospect research to identify foundation, government, corporate, and individual funding opportunities for PHI and our fiscally sponsored programs
- Analyze philanthropic trends and funder priorities to inform development strategy and guide programmatic fundraising across our diverse portfolio of public health initiatives
- Support prospect research and cultivation strategies for 40+ fiscally sponsored programs working across the public health spectrum, from maternal health to environmental justice to health equity
- Prepare funder briefs, presentations, and other prep materials for funder cultivation efforts
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Partner with Communications team on intranet development resources, collateral development, donor communications, and storytelling initiatives
- Serve as a liaison between Development and other departments, building strong working relationships and ensuring seamless coordination on fundraising initiatives

QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Minimum Qualifications
- 5 years of progressive nonprofit development experience across diverse revenue streams
- Bachelor's degree, or substitute with four additional years of relevant experience
- Exceptional writing skills with demonstrated ability to craft compelling proposals, reports, and donor communications
- Strong research skills, including experience with prospect research, foundation research, and analysis of philanthropic trends
- Experience managing donor databases, CRM systems, prospect research platforms and fundraising financial platforms
- Excellent project management and organizational skills with proven ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines
- Entrepreneurial mindset with demonstrated ability to build systems, processes, and solutions
- Flexibility, creativity, and problem-solving orientation; comfortable rolling up your sleeves and adapting to changing priorities
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with ability to build relationships across diverse teams and stakeholders
- 3 years of experience in building development systems and running development operations
- Background in public health, social services, or related mission-driven field, either through professional experience or educational training
- Experience working in a fiscally sponsored program environment or supporting multiple programs/initiatives simultaneously
