Kitchen Manager

Starting Date: Aug 25, 2026 Job Summary The Kitchen Manager is a working manager who directs the operations of the school kitchen. The Manager is responsible for organizing, leading, planning, and ensuring the quality of the food service operation. The Manager ensures proper sanitation of the kitchen and equipment, and provides nutritious meals, snacks, and catering to the students, staff, and school community. Qualifications Knowledge of: Food preparation and handling techniques; proper use of quantity food service equipment; food safety and sanitation procedures according to HACCP methods; nutrition services department record‑keeping procedures. Skilled in: Computer entry and cash handling; use and maintenance of kitchen equipment. Ability to: Assign, coordinate, and direct the work of others; complete recordkeeping accurately; order food and supplies; establish and maintain relationships with students, parents, and school personnel; work harmoniously with others; adhere to drug‑free and tobacco‑free workplace policies; meet district technology standards; complete required training; communicate in Spanish (preferred). Experience: Quality food preparation, kitchen maintenance, and food service direction; prior successful school or institutional food service (preferred); experience with the National School Lunch Program (preferred). Education: Minimum high‑school diploma or GED. Certification: Current driver’s license and food handlers card or equivalent (ServSafe certificate). Essential Job Functions Responsible for day‑to‑day direction and training for adult and student kitchen helpers. Work under the direction of the Nutrition Services Supervisor in cooperation with the principal for food service needs. Order all food and supplies weekly and maintain accurate inventory. Refer employee issues and provide feedback on staff performance. Operate POS meal accounting system; prepare daily bank deposits; maintain USDA daily production reports. Operate cafeteria program in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. Schedule cafeteria substitutes as needed. Ensure appetizing food is prepared and served according to planned menus; maintain highest sanitation standards. Supervise and assist with daily kitchen cleaning (dishes, pots, pans, equipment). Ensure all employees provide excellent customer service. Cultivate and model a respectful working and learning environment. Effectively work and communicate with students, parents, and staff from diverse cultures in English, Spanish, or other relevant languages. Work harmoniously with others. Perform other duties as assigned. Job Requirements Language Skills: Read, write, and communicate in English; comprehend district policies; communicate effectively in oral and written form. Mathematical Skills: Perform basic calculations with high accuracy. Reasoning Ability: Apply common sense to detailed instructions; solve problems with few concrete variables. Other Skills: Collaborate, establish relationships with co‑workers, supervisors, staff, students, parents, and community; manage stressful situations. Physical Demands: Walk and stand frequently; use full range of motion; bend, twist, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl occasionally; lift/move up to 40 lbs and push/pull up to 75 lbs; stand or walk up to eight hours on cement or tile floors. Work Environment: School kitchen environment; safe and sanitary use of kitchen equipment; telephone, computer, and office equipment; driving to other program sites and meetings.
