Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: RN (Registered Nurse) Specialty: Cardio Thoracic Unit Duration: 26 weeks Shift: 12-Hour Days Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: Minimum of 2 years License: Active state license required Certifications: BLS, ACLS recommended Must-Have: - EKG interpretation - Medication titration - Basic nursing skills Description: The unit has a capacity of 70 beds. Nurse-to-patient ratios are 1:4-5 during the day and 1:5-6 at night. Common diagnoses and types of patients include myocardial infarction, congestive heart failure, atrial fibrillation, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and various lung surgeries. Experience with pacemaker and AICD placement and chest tubes is essential. RNs will be required to titrate drips, including primarily Cardizem and heparin. During shifts, there is a 24/7 charge nurse available who rarely takes patients. A house supervisor is also present around the clock. Patient care technicians are available with a ratio of 1:8-9 during the day, 1:9-10 during evenings, and 1:10-12 at night. RNs are expected to troubleshoot respiratory equipment like CPAP and BiPAP if it is part of the patient's home regimen. RNs must be able to read and interpret telemetry strips as there are monitor techs present. Shifts are from 0700-1930 and 1900-0730. Nurses are required to work every other weekend and participate in holiday rotations. Float requirements to other general medical units will be necessary. The dress code allows for any color scrubs, with specific restrictions against children's or cartoon prints. Unit-specific orientation typically lasts one shift or part of one, depending on prior experience within the facility.
