Job Title: Traveling Civil Superintendent
Job Description
The Traveling Civil Superintendent leads all day-to-day field operations on complex civil and infrastructure projects, with a strong focus on Department of Defense (DoD), USACE, NAVFAC, and large commercial work. This role oversees subcontractors and field staff, manages site logistics and safety, and ensures all work complies with contract documents, UFC/UFGS standards, and USACE/NAVFAC requirements. The position offers the opportunity to work at the forefront of 3D printing, robotics, and AI-driven construction, contributing to innovative solutions that address major challenges such as the global housing crisis.
Responsibilities
- Direct all daily jobsite operations, including oversight of subcontractors, field staff, equipment, deliveries, and construction sequencing.
- Oversee all assigned trade partners to ensure compliance with safety requirements, work sequencing, and workmanship standards.
- Implement and maintain the site logistics plan, including access control, staging areas, material flow, and construction phasing, in coordination with the Construction Manager.
- Conduct daily field walks to verify progress, resolve issues, and ensure work adheres to approved drawings, submittals, specifications, and UFC/UFGS requirements.
- Prepare and maintain detailed 2-week lookahead schedules and coordinate updates with the Construction Manager for integration into the Integrated Master Schedule (IMS).
- Coordinate with base personnel and government representatives regarding inspections, escorts, access, and field activities.
- Enforce the Site-Specific Safety & Health Plan (SSHP) in accordance with EM 385-1-1, including conducting daily safety briefings, inspections, and toolbox talks.
- Enforce security compliance on site, including restricted-area access control and verification of personnel credentials.
- Identify and address safety deficiencies immediately and document all corrective actions taken.
- Support the Quality Control Manager in implementing the USACE/NAVFAC Three-Phase Quality Control Process, including Preparatory, Initial, and Follow-Up inspections.
- Verify that all installed work meets UFC/UFGS criteria, contract documents, and approved submittals.
- Track and document inspections, testing, material verification, and punch-list items in accordance with USACE/NAVFAC standards.
- Maintain accurate red-line as-built drawings and coordinate updates with the Project Engineer.
- Track daily progress, manpower, quantities, constraints, and delays, and maintain thorough daily logs, photos, and reports.
- Validate subcontractor progress quantities for billing purposes and support the Construction Manager with cost-to-complete updates.
- Identify field issues that impact schedule, cost, or quality and escalate them with clear, recommended solutions.
- Maintain Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) compliance for all field documentation and project records.
- Lead pre-task planning efforts, daily coordination meetings, and subcontractor performance reviews to ensure alignment with project goals.
- Ensure proper integration of all scopes of work and coordinate with the Project Engineer on Requests for Information (RFIs) and design clarifications.
- Support PrintOps functions, including printer mobilization, staging, site readiness, and coordination of printed wall installation with conventional construction scopes.
- Ensure that 3D-printed components integrate properly with mechanical, electrical, plumbing (MEP), framing, and finish systems.
- Assist with acceptance testing, mock-ups, and commissioning activities required by USACE/NAVFAC for new and innovative construction technologies.
Essential Skills
- 5+ years of Superintendent or field leadership experience on DoD, USACE, NAVFAC, or large commercial construction projects, with large commercial experience preferred.
- Strong knowledge of field sequencing, site logistics, and construction means and methods for civil and site construction, including sewer, water main, electrical, and road work.
- Hands-on experience managing site construction activities and coordinating multiple trade partners in a fast-paced environment.
- Experience using Procore and typical field documentation tools for daily reporting, RFIs, submittals, and progress tracking.
- Familiarity with P6 (Primavera) scheduling and integration of lookahead schedules into an Integrated Master Schedule.
- Working knowledge of UFC/UFGS requirements and their application in field construction.
- Understanding of EM 385-1-1 safety standards and their implementation on active job sites.
- Familiarity with USACE/NAVFAC quality control programs and the Three-Phase QC Process.
- Basic understanding of FAR/DFARS provisions relevant to field execution on federal projects.
- Knowledge of Anti-Terrorism/Force Protection (AT/FP) standards and base-access procedures.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to interact professionally with government inspectors, installation personnel, subcontractors, and internal project teams.
- Eligibility to obtain a Secret security clearance.
- Willingness to work at remote or secure sites with extended travel and flexible schedules, including nights and weekends.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- USACE/NAVFAC Construction Quality Management for Contractors (CQM-C) certification preferred.
- OSHA-30 or EM 385-1-1 safety certification preferred.
- Experience with innovative construction systems, including 3D printing, robotics, or other advanced building technologies.
- Prior military service or experience working on secure federal installations is advantageous.
- Experience coordinating civil scopes such as sewer, water main, electrical, and road work on complex projects.
- Demonstrated ability to lead pre-task planning, subcontractor performance reviews, and coordination meetings.
- Proven capability to manage documentation in compliance with Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) requirements.
- Adaptability and interest in working within a mission-driven, high-growth environment focused on reinventing how the world builds.
Work Environment
This role is based primarily on active military bases and secure project sites, supporting projects that operate on a 24/7 schedule. The position requires flexibility to work days, nights, weekends, and extended hours, with a typical workload of approximately 50 hours per week rather than a standard 9–5 schedule. Team members may travel frequently and spend extended periods at remote or secure locations, with opportunities to coordinate time at home based on project cadence and open communication with leadership. The work environment is highly collaborative and mission-driven, combining traditional civil construction with cutting-edge technologies such as 3D printing, robotics, and AI-driven systems. Field work takes place outdoors and in active construction zones, requiring consistent adherence to safety, security, and access-control procedures in accordance with EM 385-1-1, AT/FP standards, and base regulations. The culture emphasizes innovation, quality, and tangible impact on communities, providing an opportunity to contribute directly to the future of construction and solutions to the global housing crisis.
