Lead ED Tech at Boston Medical Center Cambridge, MA

Position Summary The Lead Emergency Technician is under the direction of the Nurse Manager for equipment management and reports to the RN for clinical oversight when performing patient care and environmental support for patients. Position: Lead ED Tech. Department: Emergency Department. Schedule: Full Time. Essential Responsibilities & Duties Model behaviors consistent with the mission values of the hospital and Steward Healthcare. Perform medical assistant duties, including EKG, phlebotomy, dressing changes, glucometer, transport, and other duties as assigned. Participate on quality improvement teams, including chairing and developing opportunity statements, data collection, and process flow analysis. Hazmat team member; CPI instructor for ED staff. Act as preceptor to new ED tech hires; assist in development of Technician Orientation Program. Oversee equipment maintenance: problem‑solve and fix malfunctioning equipment, track equipment out for repairs, ensure utility rooms are clean and meet JCAHO standards, rotate supplies to use before expiration dates, recommend changes to PAR levels, oversee annual testing compliance, assist manager with JCAHO readiness. Monitor and correct variances in supply and expense budget; help develop capital budget; process purchase requisitions for capital and weekly inventory orders; evaluate inventory quarterly. Obtain O 2 saturation via pulse oximeter, knowledge of normal values; notify RN of abnormal values; apply O 2 therapy via nasal cannula. Apply telemetry monitor leads and electrodes; perform 12‑lead EKGs as directed. Assist with comfort measures, patient positioning, and lighting/toileting. Respond productively in emergency situations; provide direct and indirect patient care, including initial airway management (notifying RN). Perform non‑complex sterile dressing changes, simple wound care, stool guaiac tests, and quality control measures. Record patient intake/output, monitor urine collection, perform glucose testing and routine QC via Nova system; notify RN of abnormal glucose levels. Participate in post‑mortem care; provide care for patients requiring 1:1 observation. Assist in applying splints, immobilize, cast as needed; assist with computer entry. Maintain confidentiality; report pertinent data to RN/MD timely; maintain data security and password compliance. Maintain unit environment: restock/prep cubicles, general cleaning, supply orders, clear hallways, store carts and equipment appropriately. Reporting Requirements Report immediately to nursing staff any changes in patient condition that warrant intervention. Maintain confidentiality and security of patient data and information; maintain computer password security. Abide by all hospital department policies and procedures, including safety policies. Job Requirements Education: High School Diploma or GED Certificate. Certificates/Licenses/Registrations Required: Basic Life Support (BLS) from AHA. Experience: Previous ED Tech experience strongly preferred. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSA) Medical terminology and procedures familiarity. Patient care standards, hygiene, safety, infection control. Basic life support and first aid, CPR, emergency procedures. Medical equipment proficiency; maintenance of stretchers, defibrillators, vital sign monitors. Healthcare regulations and compliance (HIPAA, OSHA). Patient care skills: vital signs, wound dressing, mobilization. Technical skills: electronic health record systems, accurate documentation. Communication: strong verbal and written. Adaptability and resilience. Compensation & Benefits Compensation Range: $19.72 to $29.30 per hour. Compensation is based on education, experience, and certifications.
