High School Guidance Counselor

Job Summary To implement the Missouri Comprehensive School Counseling Program to help contribute to the development of students as mature, able, and responsible men and women. Duties and Responsibilities Implement School Counseling Curriculum. Meet and instruct assigned classes at the designated locations and times. Create a school environment conducive to learning and appropriate to student maturity and interests. Prepare for classes assigned and provide written lesson plan evidence upon request of the administrator. Guide the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals, establishing clear objectives for lessons, units, and projects. Employ a variety of instructional techniques and media consistent with physical limitations and student needs. Encourage students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior. Be able to run, jump, walk, stand, sit, and lift. Implement Individual Student Planning. Assess student accomplishments regularly and provide progress reports as required. Provide educational and career planning. Provide transition activities. Offer appraisals to aid student decision making. Maintain accurate records per law, district policy, and regulation. Be available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when required. Responsive Services. Perform brief individual counseling sessions. Provide small group counseling. Participate in crisis intervention. Lead CARE teams and Response to Intervention programs. Consult with teachers, staff, students, and parents on educational issues. Lead referral for the special education process. System Support. Manage programs. Conduct evaluations. Develop and participate in professional development. Support staff and community relations. Consult and collaborate on building-level teams. Participate in building and district-level committees. Engage in community outreach. Advocate program initiatives. Support school operations. Other Duties as Assigned. Strive to implement the district’s education philosophy and instructional goals. Take precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities. Assist administration with student life policies and classroom rules. Plan and supervise assignments for aides and volunteers. Maintain professional competence through regular PDC activities and development opportunities. Attend staff meetings and serve on committees as required. Minimum Qualifications Master’s Degree in School Counseling. Three years as a classroom teacher or equivalent in a related field. Knowledge and Skills Proficient in preparing rigorous, interactive, exciting, and informative lesson plans. Proficient in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Desktop Publisher, and database management. Collaborate effectively with colleagues, parents, and administrators. Demonstrate superior interpersonal skills in a high-energy, stress environment. Maintain discretion and confidentiality in accordance with district and Board policies. Exhibit excellent written and verbal communication skills. Be self-directed, highly motivated, and able to work independently. Physical Demands Regularly required to stand, walk, sit, talk, hear, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, and lift up to 25 pounds. Requires close and distance vision, ability to adjust focus, and depth perception, as well as normal conversational and phone hearing ability. Work Environment and Conditions Primarily a school environment; occasional outdoor work. Equipment Used Personal computer, copier, fax, and calculator.
