About the Role:

The Registered Nurse (RN) in the Special Care Unit plays a critical role in delivering specialized nursing care to patients with complex medical needs requiring close monitoring and advanced clinical interventions. This position involves comprehensive assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of individualized care plans to promote optimal patient outcomes. The RN collaborates closely with multidisciplinary teams including physicians, therapists, and social workers to ensure holistic and coordinated care. The role demands vigilance in monitoring patient status, managing acute changes, and providing education and support to patients and their families. Ultimately, the RN in this unit contributes significantly to improving patient recovery and quality of life through expert clinical practice and compassionate care.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Current and valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in the United States.
• Graduation from an accredited nursing program (Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Nursing).
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Minimum of one year of clinical nursing experience, preferably in acute care or critical care settings.
• Strong knowledge of nursing principles, patient care standards, and infection control practices.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree.
• Advanced certifications such as Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN) or Certified Medical-Surgical Registered Nurse (CMSRN).
• Experience working in a Special Care Unit or similar high-acuity environment.
• Proficiency with electronic health record (EHR) systems and clinical documentation.
• Demonstrated skills in patient education and family support.

Responsibilities:

• Conduct thorough patient assessments and continuously monitor vital signs and clinical status to detect changes promptly.
• Administer medications, treatments, and interventions as prescribed, ensuring adherence to safety protocols and best practices.
• Develop, implement, and update individualized care plans in collaboration with the healthcare team.
• Provide patient and family education regarding diagnoses, treatment plans, and post-discharge care to promote understanding and compliance.
• Document all nursing care activities accurately and timely in the electronic health record system.
• Respond effectively to emergencies and acute patient needs, utilizing critical thinking and clinical judgment.
• Coordinate with interdisciplinary team members to facilitate comprehensive and seamless patient care.
• Maintain a safe, clean, and therapeutic environment in the Special Care Unit.

Skills:

The RN utilizes clinical assessment skills daily to evaluate patient conditions and identify changes requiring intervention. Strong communication skills are essential for effectively collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and educating patients and families. Critical thinking and problem-solving abilities enable the nurse to prioritize care and respond to emergencies efficiently. Technical skills are applied in administering medications, operating medical equipment, and documenting care accurately in electronic health records. Preferred skills such as advanced certifications and experience with specialized care enhance the nurse's ability to manage complex cases and contribute to continuous quality improvement initiatives.
