LES Shop Mechanical Technician

Position Overview We are a team of engineers & technicians working to launch people to the Moon and Mars. As a Mechanical Technician for the Launch Equipment Shop at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center (KSC), you will support multiple space programs including the International Space Station, Ground Systems Development, and the Space Launch System (SLS). Your role will include troubleshooting, repair, and preventive maintenance of manufacturing and CNC machining equipment, daily machine shop checks, and assembly of parts. Responsibilities Operate and maintain machine and fabrication shop fixtures, equipment, and facilities. Interpret engineering drawings, sketches, and work instructions. Collaborate with engineering personnel and technicians on the installation and operation of components, special systems, and equipment. Build manufactured parts into final assemblies according to print and work instructions. Operate forklift, man‑lift, and other equipment as required. Perform work at elevated locations using ladders, man‑lifts, scaffolding, or other platforms. Clean hardware and components before, during, and after assembly. Maintain equipment, including preventive maintenance, repairs, and part replacement. Work safely, using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE). Identify and report potential hazards or unsafe conditions. Maintain a neat and organized work area. Provide technical support for operations and maintenance issues, and communicate task completion to customers. Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent with technical training in an applicable area. Minimum of three years of related experience in mechanical maintenance and repair. Valid U.S. driver’s license. Ability to work effectively in a team environment and coordinate with multiple project disciplines. Strong organizational skills: manage and prioritize multiple projects, meet deadlines, and maintain accuracy. Self‑motivated, initiative‑driven, and able to work in dynamic environments. Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills for interfacing with management and customers. Knowledge of hand tools, power tools, lifts, pendant cranes, and precision measuring and testing equipment. Physical Requirements & Work Environment The position may require climbing stairs, ladders, and remote structures, extended periods of standing or sitting, and travel within the test complex on uneven terrain. Personal protective equipment such as hearing protection, eye protection, and other PPE will be required. Work may be conducted both indoors and outdoors, and occasional overtime or shift work may be required.
