Department Profile The Emergency Department Clinical Evaluation Unit (CEU) is a 31‑bed acute care unit that provides care to patients across multiple service lines and levels of care, excluding pediatrics and ICU. The goal is to decompress the emergency department. This care team, consisting of RNs and ED Techs, will care for a population of emergency department observation patients with a stay of 24 hours or less, following a variety of standard protocols in collaboration with an ED provider. Job Summary As a Registered Nurse with Duke University Health System, you will prioritize patient care and provide both direct and indirect total nursing care. Utilizing the nursing process—assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation—you will help achieve patient and care team outcomes in a patient‑centered environment. You will plan and provide advanced and/or specialized nursing care, guided by the DUHS Professional Practice model. Participation in the clinical ladder program, educational activities, departmental committees, research projects, or other health‑related projects may be required. You will provide nursing services to patients and families in accordance with the scope of the RN as defined by the North Carolina Board of Nursing, and adhere to all applicable local, state, and federal regulations. Work Hours & Shifts Full time: 3–12 hour shifts Day shift (07:00–19:00) Knowledge, Skills, Education, Abilities Knowledge of the scope of the registered nurse, licensed practical nurse, and NCA. Understanding and appropriate application of the nursing process. Professional theory, practice, and procedure knowledge. Ability to assess needs of acute and chronically ill patients and their families. Ability to seek out resources independently and collaborate with others. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Clear communication with patients, families, visitors, the healthcare team, physicians, administrators, and leaders. Teaching patients and families in accordance with the nursing plan of care. Use of sensory and cognitive functions to process and prioritize information, treatment, and follow‑up. Fine motor skill competency. Competent in BLS and other specialized life support requirements designated by work area or organization. Ability to record activities, document assessments, plan of care, interventions, evaluation, and re‑evaluation of patient status. Computer proficiency and the ability to learn new software programs. Documentation and communication of pertinent information using computer and/or paper documentation tools. Navigation of the entity to provide clinical care for patients. Ability to withstand prolonged standing and walking. Ability to remain focused and organized. Working knowledge of procedures and techniques for routine and special treatments. Infection control procedures and safety precautions knowledge. Completion of appropriate JCAHO and other regulatory requirements. Preferred Qualifications 1 or more years of RN experience in an emergency department or inpatient setting with mixed acuity. Graduation from an accredited Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (or higher), Associate’s Degree in Nursing, or Nursing Diploma program. RNs without a Bachelor’s degree must enroll in an appropriate BSN program within two years of start and complete it within seven years. Licensure, Certification or Registration Current registration with the North Carolina State Board of Nursing as a registered professional nurse or current compact RN licensure to practice in North Carolina. BLS certification required. ACLS certification preferred; required within 3 months of employment. BSN completion (if not already earned) within two years of start and within seven years total.
