Position Summary
The Director of Staff Development (DSD) is responsible for leading clinical education, staff development, orientation, competency training, and ongoing regulatory education initiatives within the Skilled Nursing Facility at Hollenbeck Palms. This position partners closely with Nursing Leadership to support quality resident care, workforce development, staff compliance, survey readiness, and continuous performance improvement while promoting a culture of professionalism, accountability, and compassionate service.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Staff Development & Clinical Education
Develops, coordinates, implements, and evaluates clinical education and in-service training programs for licensed nurses, Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs), and ancillary staff.
Oversees and maintains all education, competency, and in-service records through designated learning management systems, and other approved platforms.
Coordinates orientation and onboarding programs for nursing staff to ensure understanding of facility policies, procedures, job responsibilities, resident rights, safety standards, and applicable regulations.
Conducts and documents competency validations and ongoing clinical skills assessments.
Collaborates with department leaders to identify educational needs and implement corrective education plans when necessary.
Maintains current educational and licensure records for nursing personnel.
Ensures required in-services are completed timely and documented in accordance with regulatory requirements.
Develops lesson plans, training materials, competency tools, and educational resources for clinical staff.
Assists with survey readiness activities and staff education related to identified deficiencies, quality indicators, and regulatory compliance concerns.
Coordinates facility-wide mandatory training and continuing education programs.
Quality Assurance & Regulatory Compliance
Participates in Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) activities and committees.
Assists with audits, chart reviews, compliance monitoring, and follow-up corrective action plans.
Presents quality and education-related reports to leadership and committees as required.
Assists in maintaining compliance with federal, state, and local healthcare regulations.
Supports ongoing preparation for state surveys, complaint investigations, and regulatory inspections.
Maintains current knowledge of regulatory updates and communicates operational impacts to leadership and staff.
Staffing & Operational Support
Assists with CNA staffing coordination and scheduling to support resident care needs and regulatory staffing requirements.
Supports recruitment efforts by participating in interviews and candidate evaluations for nursing personnel.
Provides coaching, mentorship, and guidance to nursing staff to support professional development and performance improvement.
Assists leadership with monitoring CNA documentation, Activities of Daily Living (ADL) documentation, resident care standards, and clinical workflows.
Assists with monitoring staff compliance with facility policies, procedures, and clinical standards.
May provide occasional clinical or operational support during staffing shortages or emergency situations.
Leadership & Customer Service
Promotes a culture of professionalism, accountability, teamwork, resident-centered care, and continuous improvement.
Establishes and maintains positive working relationships with residents, families, staff, physicians, vendors, and regulatory agencies.
Responds timely and professionally to concerns, complaints, and grievances.
Maintains confidentiality of resident, employee, and organizational information in accordance with HIPAA and company policy.
Supports and demonstrates Hollenbeck Palms’ mission, values, and commitment to quality care and service excellence.
Requirements:Qualifications
- Current and active California Registered Nurse (RN) license required. LVN may be considered based on experience and operational need.
- Minimum one (1) year of experience in skilled nursing or long-term care preferred.
- Prior staff development, clinical education, or supervisory experience preferred.
- Working knowledge of CMS, CDPH, OSHA, and Title 22 regulations.
- Ability to effectively educate, coach, mentor, and develop staff.
- Strong organizational, communication, documentation, and leadership skills.
- Ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced healthcare environment.
- Current CPR certification required.
- Must successfully pass background clearance requirements, including DOJ and FBI screening.

- Respond appropriately to emergency situations and staffing needs.
$45 - $50 per hour
