SPED Interpreter and Braillist - COMS/TVI SupportJob Title: SPED Interpreter and Braillist - FLSA: Nonexempt COMS/TVI Support Pay Grade: Clerical/Para 2Reports to: Program Manager of Related ServicesCalendar Days: 187Dept./School: Special Education Department Special Education Annex Revised: 1.27.2026Primary Purpose: The SPED Interpreter and Braillist provides interpretation services for COMS to support safe and effective orientation and mobility instruction for students with visual impairments, while preparing braille materials as recommended by the TVI and classroom teacher.QualificationsHigh school diploma from an accredited high school or GEDSome college preferredCertification from an accredited agency (e.g., Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters – CCHI) preferredSpecial Knowledge/SkillsBilingual in English and Spanish, with strong translation and interpretation skillsAbility to accurately interpret COMS instructionsEffective oral and written communication skillsExcellent written and verbal communication skillsWillingness and ability to learn brailleKnowledge of visual impairment terminology, orientation and mobility concepts, and adaptive equipmentStrong organizational, interpersonal, communication, and time management skillsAbility to work independently and problem-solving skillsExperience with inventory, record-keeping, and administrative tasksProficiency in basic computer applications, including word processing softwareProficiency with office technology, including Google Drive, Calendar, and basic office equipmentStrong keyboarding skills (minimum 40 WPM)Reliable transportationExperienceMinimum of two (2) years of experience working with children or 48 college credit hoursAt least one year of interpreting experience preferredMajor Responsibilities and DutiesInterpretation and Student SupportProvide interpretation services for Orientation & Mobility (O&M) sessions on and off campus, including evaluations conducted at school, in the home, and in the communityInterpret during parent meetings, low vision appointments, and Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) meetings as neededAssist COMS in implementing IEP goals and objectives for students with disabilitiesSupport students during COMS-led drills, activities, and exercisesAssist students in general and special education settings, including Community-Based Instruction, Physical Education, Music, Cafeteria, Bus Arrival/Dismissal, and Field TripsMaintain professional conduct and confidentiality at all timesTravel to assigned locations as necessaryBraille Transcription & Material PreparationTranscribe educational materials, including textbooks, workbooks, assessments, and tactile graphics such as maps and charts, into brailleCollaborate with TVIs to adapt classroom materials to meet individual student needsMaintain organized, labeled electronic records of all transcriptions for future referenceEnsure materials are completed and delivered on time to support instructionUtilize braille technology, embossing tools, and assistive software; stay current with technological advancementsInventory & Clerical SupportMaintain inventory of braille materials and instructional suppliesReconcile stock records, conduct physical inventory counts, and resolve discrepanciesReceive, restock, label, and organize supplies and instructional materialsProcess returns and update inventory systems as neededPerform general office tasks, including data entry, phone support, and use of office equipment (copiers, calculators, etc.)Other DutiesParticipate in required training, professional development, and ongoing growth opportunitiesDemonstrate dependable attendance and punctualityAdhere to federal, state, district, and school policies, including those governing special education and student privacyMaintain professional ethics and exercise discretion in all interactionsSupport the objectives of the Special Education DepartmentPerform additional duties as assigned by supervisory staff or administratorsSupervisory Responsibilities: NoneEvaluation: The evaluation of the Interpreter/Braillist - COMS/TVI support is a responsibility resting with the Lead Certified Orientation & Mobility Specialist in collaboration with the Lead Teacher of the Visually Impaired, and the Program Manager of Related Services.
