Assurance Senior Manager, Non-Profit

Job Summary:The Assurance Senior Manager, Non-Profit will be responsible for developing suggestions to improve client internal controls and accounting procedures. The role will also advise clients on various economic and regulatory risks in a specific industry field of expertise by identifying financial and non-financial performance measures, formulating, and communicating the audit plan, answering complex questions involving GAAP and GAAS and composing technical consultation memos on engagements related to GAAP / GAAS issues. The individual in this role will be charged with marketing, networking, and business development within an area of expertise while maintaining key client relationships and acting as the primary contact for clients regarding complex questions and information. Additionally, Assurance Senior Manager, Non-Profit will be is a critical part of the offices / region’s Assurance leadership team and will be involved in the direct supervision of numerous staff on various in process engagements, problem resolution and delegation stages of the overall concurrent process audits.Job Duties:Control Environment and Risk AssessmentApplies advanced knowledge and understanding of the collective effect of various factors on establishing or enhancing effectiveness, or mitigating the risks, of specific policies and proceduresApplies an advanced understanding of objectives and components of the overall control environment and organization, and supervisory controls Validates and assesses effectiveness of internal control over financial reporting and over compliance in an audit performed in accordance with government auditing standards Identifies and communicates to management and audit committee results of the annual audit and makes suggestions to improve client internal controls and accounting proceduresIdentifies and delegates functions of the audit to the auditor in charge as deemed appropriateSupervises the work of the audit team and reviews workpapers and conclusions during audit field work Provides on-the-job-training to the engagement staff during audit field workGAAPApplies advanced knowledge of GAAP, not-for profit industry specific issues and understanding of Government Auditing Standards; applies these principles to client transactions; and documents and communicates an understanding and application of these principlesIdentifies and consults with clients on the impact of new or recently issued accounting pronouncementsPresents and discusses alternative application of generally accepted accounting principles and arguments for/against such alternativesDrafts complex financial statements and related footnote disclosures and effectively communicates these to the clientIdentifies complex accounting issues and forms and documents resolution, seeking counsel of BDO technical experts as neededConsiders Uniform Guidance rules in understanding and executing financial statement audits under Government Auditing StandardsGAASApplies advanced knowledge and understanding of professional standards; application of the principles contained in professional standards; and the ability to document and communicate an understanding and application of professional standards on an engagementApplies advanced knowledge of professional standards/practices, including GAAS and GAGAS in performing and supervising workProvides guidance to others and affirms conclusions made by othersCommunicates matters required to be reported to the Audit Committee/Board and those charged with governanceApplies the use of efficiency tools such as statistical sampling, CAATS, Advanced Data Analytics, etc.MethodologyLearns and then applies advanced knowledge and application of BDO standards, policies and technology that guide effective and efficient delivery of quality services and productsConducts detailed reviews to assure audit is completed in accordance with BDO’s assurance manual standardsPrepares or reviews required communications to management and audit committees, ensuring timeliness and completenessConcludes and recommends appropriate outcomes to critical issuesInitiates and prepares client acceptance/retention procedures where appropriatePlans the audit process and oversees the execution of procedures with quality, efficiency, and completeness despite pressures of deadlinesExecutes proper BDO methodology throughout the audit and through proper archiving proceduresResearchApplies methodology used to seek or maintain information from authoritative sources and to draw conclusions regarding a targeted issue based on that informationDefines the team’s approach to conducting research projects and ensures their timely completionApplies advanced knowledge of all appropriate research tools and draws conclusions based upon appropriate researchPrepares memo supporting research/conclusions and consults with others if appropriatePresents issues to the National Regional Technical Principle or concurring reviewer effectively and accuratelyOther duties as requiredSupervisory Responsibilities:Sets the tone for teamwork by supporting others in their work and delivering on commitments made to the team members and clients Supervises assurance managers, associates and senior associates on all concurrent engagementsReviews work prepared by assurance managers, associates and senior associates, and provides review commentsActs as a Career Advisor to various assurance associates and senior associates assigned as adviseesSchedules and manages workload of RISE team members, assurance associates and senior associatesProvides verbal and written performance feedback to subordinates Teaches/coaches assurance managers, seniors and associates to provide on-the-job learningQualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:Education:Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Accounting, requiredMBA/Masters in Accountancy, preferredExperience:Seven (7) years of work experience, requiredSignificant supervisory experience, requiredLicense/Certifications:CPA, requiredSoftware:Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Products, including Windows, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, required Proficient in the use of various assurance applications and research tools, preferredLanguage:N/AOther Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:Ability to demonstrate strong leadership skills, and be a role model to managers and staffAdvanced GAAP, GAS and GAAS knowledgeStrong working knowledge of the Uniform GuidanceExcellent verbal and written communication skillsExcellent people development and delegation skills, including training/instruction and engagement budgetingExecutive presence with the ability to act as the primary contact for clients, as well as prepare and present presentations to clients and potential clientsExcellent client development/relationship-building skillsExcellent decision-making skillsAbility to take charge of an entire engagementAbility to research and resolve complex accounting issuesAbility to be part of business development and marketing for the non-profit groupAble to promote the use of all BDO client service specialties/offerings, including BDO International and the BDO AllianceAble to be responsible for engagement profitability, including billings and collections, and maintaining engagement team focus on productivity and efficiencyIndividual salaries that are offered to a candidate are determined after consideration of numerous factors including but not limited to the candidate’s qualifications, experience, skills, and geography.NYC/Long Island/Westchester Range: $140,000 - $165,000At BDO, how we show up matters.
