Lecturer in German

Position Overview The Department of German and Italian at Smith College invites applications for a 3‑year renewable, benefits‑eligible position in German Studies to begin July 1, 2026, at the rank of Lecturer. This continuing, non‑tenure track, teaching‑focused faculty position has teaching as the primary responsibility and includes access to research funds and a track to promotion to Senior Lecturer. The successful candidate will teach five courses per year at all levels of the curriculum in German and in English, and will actively contribute to department life and curricular development. The area of specialization is open, but an interest in language acquisition is essential and experience in curricular design is preferred. Responsibilities Teach five courses per year at undergraduate and graduate levels in German and English. Actively contribute to department life and curricular development. Engage in the department’s transnational approach and collaborate across the Five College Consortium. Qualifications Ph.D. or ABD status in German required at time of appointment. Fluent in German and English. Proven record of excellence in teaching German at the undergraduate level. Interest in language acquisition essential; experience in curricular design preferred. Strong commitment to equity and inclusion; candidates from groups underrepresented in German Studies are strongly encouraged. Benefits Competitive benefits package. Starting pay range between $75,800 and $77,800. Benefits vary based on individual qualifications.
