Job Description and Duties

Under the general direction of the Bureau of Gambling Control (Bureau) Director, the Assistant Director (AD) manages and administers the Compliance Branch which includes the Compliance and Enforcement Section, the Audits and Compact Compliance Section and the Special Programs Unit.  The AD plans, organizes, directs, and administers the work of professional staff in each program area and participates in the development of goals, policies, and regulations to effectively administer the Gambling Control Act and the Bureau’s responsibilities under the Tribal-State Gaming Compacts.  The AD provides consultation, direction and supervision to Bureau management and prepares performance evaluations for Special Agents in Charge, the Special Agent Supervisor and the Supervising Management Auditor.  In addition, the AD represents the Bureau on operational and policy issues before the legislature, governmental agencies, top law enforcement administrators, representatives from the tribal gaming and cardroom industries and the public and may be assigned responsibility for direction of local law enforcement activities.  The AD oversees and coordinates procedures and guidelines for processing matters related to personnel, hiring, grievances, disciplinary actions, labor relations, contracts, training and computer technologies and monitors and makes recommendations relative to budge expenditures and preparation.

Please note that all new to state employees will be given the minimum salary of the classification. For current state employees and/or those with reinstatement rights, your salary will be determined in accordance with the applicable laws, rules, and regulations.

Strong written and verbal communication skills; knowledge of Microsoft Word and related word processing functions; excellent organizational skills; exceptional attention to detail; ability to work under pressure and perform multiple tasks with accuracy, precision and neatness; ability to maintain professional and courteous working relationships with all levels of staff; ability to foster positive working relationships with internal/external customers and/or contacts; experience with and knowledge of law enforcement programs within the State of California and interactions with local and federal law enforcement agencies; ability to successfully lead and supervise groups of individuals; experience in managing and supervising multidisciplinary professional and administrative staff; knowledge of the Bureau of Gambling Control's overall mission and goals and how it interrelates to the Division of Law Enforcement's programs.  Act independently as well as in a team environment; receive and follow directions; and strong work ethic and attendance.
