Role Summary

The Senior Packaging Engineer owns the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of packaging for inbound components, raw materials, and inter-plant material movement. The role covers custom racks, returnable containers, totes, bins, dunnage, and expendable packaging for domestic and international shipments.

This position partners with Logistics, Supply Chain, Manufacturing, Quality, Purchasing, Materials, Safety, suppliers, and tier 1 and tier 2 partners. This role is located at our Plymouth, MI facility and reports directly to a Manager, Packaging Engineering.

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain packaging standards for inbound and inter-plant material flow.
• Design and implement custom racks, containers, dunnage, and expendable packaging.
• Review engineering drawings and specifications to determine packaging, quality, safety, and material requirements.
• Own or support PFEP, packaging master data, and process-flow mapping.
• Evaluate returnable versus expendable packaging using cost, freight, storage, handling, repair, and disposal considerations.
• Build packaging cost models and partner with Purchasing and Logistics on supplier quotes and negotiations.
• Work with suppliers to communicate requirements, approve designs, and resolve packaging nonconformances.
• Lead packaging projects, supplier activities, plant trials, launch readiness, and continuous-improvement efforts.
• Apply relevant ISTA, ASTM, UN, safety, ergonomic, and sustainability requirements.
• Communicate technical information clearly to operators, suppliers, engineers, managers, and senior leaders.
• Maintain safe, positive, and collaborative working relationships across the organization.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Packaging Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Supply Chain, Logistics, or equivalent experience.
• Seven or more years of packaging engineering experience; automotive experience preferred.
• Experience with returnable packaging, expendables, custom racks, dunnage, containers, and material handling.
• Experience with PFEP, material-flow mapping, packaging validation, and supplier management.
• Experience developing packaging cost models and evaluating total cost of ownership.
• Ability to interpret engineering drawings and manufacturing requirements.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office, especially Excel and PowerPoint.
• SolidWorks, CATIA, or comparable CAD experience.
• Strong communication, negotiation, organization, and problem-solving skills.
• Willingness to work with suppliers and manufacturing teams on-site as needed.

Pay Disclosure

The salary range for this role is $89,900-$112,400 for Michigan based applicants. This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting. An employee's position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, specific competencies, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, geographic location, shift, and organizational needs.

The successful candidate may be eligible for annual performance bonus and equity awards.
