Position Overview

The Associate Dean for Academic Affairs plays a pivotal role in evaluating both didactic and clinical education within the Dean's office of the Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine (AZCOM). This role encompasses four primary areas: teaching, research, service, and administration. Reporting directly to the Dean of AZCOM, candidates must hold a Ph.D. from an accredited institution in a relevant discipline. The ideal candidate will stay updated in their educational field and possess demonstrated expertise in teaching and academic leadership within medical education. This is a faculty position that is not tenure-track.

To qualify for this role, candidates must possess a Ph.D. from an accredited institution in a suitable field. The Associate Dean for Academic Affairs is expected to remain informed about developments in their area of education and showcase substantial experience in teaching and academic leadership in the realm of medical education.

Key Responsibilities

The responsibilities associated with this position are categorized into four main areas: teaching, research, service, and administration.

Teaching

• Develop and present an annual faculty development plan to the Dean.
• Engage in teaching activities within their area of expertise.
• Conduct an annual review of COMLEX performance with AZCOM faculty.
• Update the COMLEX performance statistics on the AZCOM Fast Facts website each year.
• Facilitate remediation for students who do not pass any section of COMLEX.
• Provide student performance metrics to the Curriculum Committee to aid in course evaluations.
• Collaborate with the Associate Dean for Curricular Integration and Faculty Development to assess pre-clinical student performance.
• Assist the Associate Dean for Clinical Education in evaluating clinical and post-rotation examination performance.
• Support the Associate Dean for Clinical Education in tracking residency placements, residency program director surveys, alumni feedback, and other performance-related data.
• Supervise the Director of Assessment and assist the Dean in managing students on leave to ensure they remain on track for graduation and residency placements.
• Help maintain the Residency Placement Match Tool and provide faculty development for its use in student advising.

Research & Scholarly Activity

• Engage and mentor clinical faculty in educational and/or research initiatives, with documentation of participation through publications in peer-reviewed journals, presentations at local or national conferences, poster sessions, NBOME question writing, or grant applications.
• Oversee student research projects funded by the Dean's Office at AZCOM.
• Assist faculty in the Department of Clinical Education in advancing their research endeavors.

Service

• Serve on various University and college committees as assigned, including but not limited to the Curriculum Committee and Clinical and Preclinical Promotions Committees.
• Participate in the Admissions process as an interviewer.
• Deliver Admissions presentations on behalf of the Dean.
• Contribute to the AZCOM segment of Orientation.
• Assist in organizing graduation events for AZCOM students.
• Participate as a presenter in faculty development programs.
• Support the Dean and team members with annual Medical Student Performance Evaluations.
• Represent AZCOM faculty at educational conferences.

Administration

• Supervise and develop faculty and staff within the Department of Assessment.
• Facilitate preceptor development through feedback from the Preceptor Report Card.
• Advise faculty in the Department of Assessment regarding promotion and rank advancement.
• Manage and develop the annual budget for AZCOM's Department of Assessment.
• Conduct annual performance evaluations for all faculty and staff under the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.
• Assist in the yearly update of the AZCOM catalog and website.
• Contribute to the preparation of annual AACOM reports.
• Support the Dean in ensuring accreditation compliance for AZCOM, including all necessary annual and mid-cycle reports.
• Assist with the annual outcomes assessment programming at MWU.
• Oversee AZCOM exit and alumni surveys.
• Perform additional duties as assigned by the Dean.
