Physician - Supervisory Musculoskeletal with EDRP

Summary Supervisory Musculoskeletal Physician – Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Service (PM&RS). We are seeking an enthusiastic and highly organized physician leader to serve as the Supervisory Musculoskeletal Physician for PM&RS – an exciting central role that connects and coordinates care across multiple specialties, including therapy services, orthopedic surgery, PM&RS, medical residency programs, and comprehensive pain management. Qualifications United States Citizenship; non‑citizens may be appointed only when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy. Education: Doctor of Medicine or equivalent osteopathic medicine degree from a VA‑approved school. License: Current full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Completion of a VA‑approved residency in an accredited core specialty program leading to board certification eligibility. (Approved residencies include ACGME, AOA, or other non‑U.S. programs with at least five years of verified U.S. practice.) Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited programs who meet the basic requirements may be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs) on an intermittent or fee‑basis. PRPs must be fully licensed physicians. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Preferred Experience: Board certified in PM&R; subspecialty certification or fellowship in sports or spine medicine; ≥1 year prior experience in a fast‑paced, high‑volume musculoskeletal outpatient practice; ≥1 year supervisory experience; experience in interdisciplinary clinic or program development; ≥1 full year experience performing ultrasound‑guided injections and platelet‑rich plasma therapy as an attending physician. Physical Requirements: Ability to lift and carry ≤15 pounds, use both hands, and walk for 1–2 hours. Vision and Hearing: Corrective lenses are acceptable; hearing aid permitted; mental and emotional stability required. Duties Provide high‑quality patient care and education using a consultative/triage‑focused model, primarily serving Veterans with isolated musculoskeletal complaints and administering in‑clinic injections (corticosteroids, hyaluronic acid, platelet‑rich plasma) under ultrasound guidance. Collaborate with specialty programs for complex cases: outpatient polytrauma for MSK issues with neurologic comorbidities; comprehensive pain clinic for non‑operative patients requiring long‑term pain management. Supervise and mentor PM&RS and orthopedic residents in a dynamic, team‑oriented clinic environment. Work alongside therapy staff to support flexible scheduling, rapid coordination, and efficient patient flow. Participate in acute inpatient rehabilitation call coverage for the 12‑bed inpatient unit (approximately 4–5 weeks per year, evenly distributed). Administrative Duties: Lead interdisciplinary team activities; review orthopedic surgery and/or PM&R consults for medical appropriateness; participate in peer reviews; maintain medical licensing and board certification requirements; obtain resident supervisory privileges through the medical school affiliate; supervise IPU‑assigned Physical and Occupational Therapy staff in collaboration with the Outpatient Therapy Supervisor. Clinical Duties: Conduct comprehensive history and physical examination in compliance with national guidelines; utilize point‑of‑care ultrasound as needed; order diagnostic studies (laboratory tests, X‑rays, EMG, ECG, etc.) as approved; consult other disciplines (occupational therapy, physical therapy, neuropsychology, audiology, speech‑language pathology, vision, dental, psychosocial) as necessary. Carry out health promotion and disease prevention activities, including education and shared decision‑making. Write medical orders and prescriptions for non‑controlled substances as appropriate. Evaluation and treatment of musculoskeletal conditions, including specialty care; perform corticosteroid, hyaluronic acid, and platelet‑rich plasma injections and other clinic‑based procedures as indicated. Call coverage of the inpatient rehabilitation unit; document care in the Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS) and other VA systems per STVHCS requirements. Provide education and counseling to patients and families regarding preventive care, medical conditions, and prescribed treatments.
