Generator Field Service Technician, C-Level

Location: Greater Boston and eastern Massachusetts

Schedule: Full time, shared on-call rotation

Pay: $32.00 to $36.00 per hour, plus company vehicle

LaTrae Consulting Group is recruiting field service technicians for a growing power generation service company in the area. Privately held, long established in the Northeast standby power market, and one of the few service companies in the region that runs its own in-house technician training program instead of poaching everyone else's.

These are added seats, not backfills. New customer work is landing now and they are building headcount to cover it. Direct hire, on their payroll, from day one.

We do not publish our client's name. Call me and I will tell you who it is, what the shop is actually like, and who you would be working for.

The seat

This is an entry level seat on the generator side. It is not an entry level seat on the tools.

They will teach you the generator specifics: the controls, the transfer switches, the load bank work, the paralleling side further down the road. What they will not teach you is how to turn a wrench or read a meter. You need to arrive with mechanical hands already, either on gensets or on diesel engines.

The Boston territory is hospitals and health systems, biotech and life sciences, universities, and a growing data center footprint. Work stays inside about 90 minutes of the metro, so you are home at night.

What you'll be doing

• Preventive maintenance on standby generator systems up to 350kW: oil, filters, coolant, belts, batteries, charging system checks
• Basic repairs and diagnostics, working toward advanced troubleshooting
• Support start-ups, load bank testing, and larger jobs alongside B and A level techs
• Complete and submit your own work orders
• Shared on-call rotation

What you bring

You need one of these two. A general trade background on its own is not enough for this seat.

• At least one year of hands-on generator preventive maintenance. Standby or smaller gensets both count: residential and light commercial standby, mobile and rental units, or small industrial sets. You have done the PM yourself, start to finish, and run the unit afterward.
• Or strong hands-on diesel experience. Real engine work: preventive maintenance, diagnostics, fuel systems, cooling systems, starting and charging. Truck, heavy equipment, marine, or military diesel all count.

Either way, you also need:

• Basic electrical you can demonstrate: multimeter use, continuity, voltage checks
• Able to read a wiring diagram, or close enough that the training will land
• Valid driver's license with a clean motor vehicle record
• Able to take a shared on-call rotation

A plus: EGSA, trade school or an apprenticeship, military technical training such as 12P, 91D, or marine engineman, and any exposure to Kohler, Cummins or Onan, Generac, Caterpillar, or Deep Sea and ComAp controls.

What this seat is not

Automotive lube, tire, and quick-service work on its own does not carry over. Neither does general facilities or building maintenance with no engine or genset time. If your hands-on has been light vehicle service, this is not the seat, and I would rather tell you that now than waste your afternoon.

What we will ask you on the call

• What size sets you have worked on, which makes, and what you actually did on them
• Whether you have completed a generator PM on your own, start to finish
• How you would approach a unit that cranks but will not start, or a transfer switch that did not transfer

• $32.00 to $36.00 per hour

Why this seat
