Upper Darby Township is actively seeking an Assistant Foreman for the Parks Division to help lead daily maintenance operations and ensure our parks, athletic fields, playgrounds, and public spaces remain safe, attractive, and functional for residents and visitors. This hands-on supervisory role combines field leadership, operational oversight, and technical expertise in park maintenance, landscaping, and recreational facilities management. The Assistant Foreman serves as a key resource for staff, helps coordinate daily work assignments, and acts on behalf of the Parks Supervisor when necessary. Key responsibilities include overseeing the maintenance and preparation of athletic fields, playgrounds, park structures, trails, picnic areas, and landscaped grounds throughout the Township. The Assistant Foreman will direct maintenance crews in tasks such as mowing, pruning, mulching, planting, weed and insect control, equipment operation, and facility repairs. The position is also responsible for assisting with the procurement of materials and supplies, maintaining inventory of equipment and resources, and ensuring staff adhere to established safety procedures and operational standards. During emergencies and seasonal weather events, the Assistant Foreman will manage crews engaged in snow and ice removal operations and respond to situations requiring immediate attention. The role requires strong leadership and communication skills, including the ability to supervise and train personnel, coordinate activities with other Public Works divisions, and interact professionally with community members. The Assistant Foreman will routinely evaluate work quality, help develop and implement operational procedures, address maintenance concerns, and assist in resolving issues related to vandalism, facility upkeep, and park operations. Schedule/Other Information Monday- Friday 7:00am - 3:30pm, including participation in emergency response, snow operations, and weather-related events as needed Pay Range $40.57 per hour ($84,395.40 annually) Benefits Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage, plus a pension plan and life insurance. Employees may also obtain supplemental coverage for personal needs. Position Requirements Qualified candidates must possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent and a valid driver\'s license. Applicants must have a minimum of ten (10) years of experience in parks maintenance, along with at least ten (10) years of practical experience involving playground equipment installation, maintenance, and inspection. Candidates should demonstrate extensive knowledge of parks maintenance operations, landscaping practices, athletic field preparation, equipment operation, crew supervision, and maintenance scheduling. The ability to read street maps, navigate Township roadways, communicate effectively with staff and the public, and safely operate Township vehicles is required. Successful candidates must also have experience training and supervising employees while maintaining high standards of workplace safety. Preferred qualifications include an associate degree or other advanced education, as well as significant experience working within a Parks and Recreation Department environment. Additional consideration will be given to candidates who possess strong organizational skills, experience managing inventories and work crews, knowledge of playground safety standards, and familiarity with federal, state, and local regulations related to parks maintenance operations. Candidates who can effectively balance field responsibilities, personnel management, and public service interactions will thrive in this role. Applicants must also be capable of meeting the physical demands of the position, including working outdoors in varying weather conditions, traversing uneven terrain, and performing duties in environments involving noise, dust, fumes, and mechanical hazards.
