Position Summary: The Accountant is a full-time, salaried position with benefits that plays a vital role in supporting the financial health and operational success of the organization. This position is responsible for a broad range of accounting and financial activities, including accounts payable, account reconciliations, month-end close, payroll support, fixed asset management, financial reporting, and compliance-related reporting. As a key member of the Finance team, the Accountant helps ensure the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of financial information while demonstrating exceptional stewardship of public resources and taxpayer investments. This role collaborates with departments across the organization to support informed decision-making, maintain strong internal controls, and identify opportunities to improve financial processes and systems. The ideal candidate is highly organized, detail-oriented, and capable of managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. Essential Job Functions: Perform a broad range of accounting functions, including accounts payable, cash receipts, account reconciliations, journal entries, and maintenance of supporting schedules for multiple entities. Review, code, and process vendor invoices, employee expense reimbursements, credit card transactions, recurring payments, and ACH transactions in a timely and accurate manner. Manage accounts payable operations, including procurement and encumbrance tracking, and support bi-weekly payment processing. Process and accurately record cash receipts, deposits, grants, contributions, and electronic payment activity. Maintain the fixed asset ledger, record related transactions, and perform periodic reconciliations. Prepare balance sheet reconciliations, investigate discrepancies, and ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial records. Participate in monthly, quarterly, and year-end close activities to support timely and accurate financial reporting. Assist with the preparation of financial reports, analyses, and other information to support management, Board, and operational decision-making. Support annual audit activities, tax filings, regulatory reporting, and other compliance requirements, including 1099 reporting and sales tax filings. Maintain financial records and documentation in accordance with applicable accounting standards, internal controls, and organizational policies. Serve as a backup for payroll processing and assist employees with payroll-related questions as needed. Prepare and maintain financial reports, including bi-weekly encumbrance reporting and other operational reporting tools. Collaborate with staff across the organization to provide financial information, answer accounting-related questions, and support organizational initiatives. Support the implementation and continuous improvement of accounting systems, processes, and internal controls to increase efficiency and effectiveness. Perform other duties and special projects as assigned in support of the Finance team and organizational goals. Education, Licenses, and Certifications: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance preferred; applicable experience may considered in lieu of a formal degree. CPA or working towards a designation is a plus. Experience: Minimum of three (3) years of progressively responsible experience related to the duties of this position. Municipal, government or nonprofit experience preferred, whether that is through direct service or client work. Work experience with annual audit preparation and a procurement policy a plus. Technical Skills: Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Adobe. High proficiency with Microsoft Excel is required. Familiarity with Abila software is a major plus. Comfortable using everyday technology, including computers, tablets, and office equipment. Ability to learn software applications as necessary.
