Pathology Assistant

Assist in the preparation and performance of gross examination and dissection of surgical pathology specimens. Under the supervision of a pathologist, describe gross anatomic features and dissect surgical specimens. Prepare tissue sections for microscopic examination, including preparation of frozen sections and permanent sections. Ensure appropriate specimen accessioning and labeling of surgical pathology specimens. Obtain case history, laboratory data, and copies of scans and X-rays, when indicated. Assist in coding gross specimens during gross description. Organize and coordinate the anatomic pathology grossing for all specimens for grossing tables. Update and use Voice Recognition templates as needed. Troubleshoot Voice Recognition issues. Assist the pathologist in preparation, staining, and cover slipping of samples selected for frozen sections. Manage inventory of designated gross room supplies. Demonstrate safe use of grossing tables and related equipment. Prepare specimens for histology as needed. Assist in the preparation and performance of post-mortem examinations when needed. Accurately enter required information on the laboratory information system. Choose appropriate samples for decalcification and submit adequately decalcified tissue. Assist with updating the Gross Room Manual as needed. Maintain open communication with pathologists and histology laboratory staff. Perform all other related duties as assigned. May be exposed to chemicals necessary to perform required tasks. The position operates in a professional office environment. Ability to use equipment associated with laboratory positions. Ability to remain stationary for extended periods. Ability to move about the office frequently. Primary Population Served: Neonatal, Infant, Pediatric, Adolescent, Adult, Geriatric, and non-patient care population.
