Claims Counsel
$150k - $200kCorgi
Chicago, IL or Atlanta, GA | Full-Time | Hybrid Compensation: $150,000–$200,000 Base Salary | Equity | Benefits About Corgi Corgi is a full-stack insurance carrier building better, faster insurance products from the ground up. We are not just a broker: we design, underwrite, price, and issue insurance products directly across a growing platform that includes admitted carriers, risk retention groups, captives, and reinsurance entities. Insurance remains one of the largest and least automated sectors of financial services. Corgi is rebuilding it using technology, AI, and a vertically integrated operating model. About the Role We are looking for an attorney to own the handling and resolution of Corgi's most significant and complex claims, including litigated matters, from first notice through final resolution. You will manage a portfolio of high‑severity and litigated claims across a broad range of commercial insurance products. You will direct investigations, set reserves, develop resolution strategies, manage defense counsel, and negotiate settlements—not simply monitor work handled by someone else. This is not an insurance‑defense position, and it is not a routine desk‑adjusting role. It is an in‑house role for an attorney who can independently evaluate liability, damages, and exposure, manage litigation efficiently, and drive difficult claims to the right outcome. You will work closely with Corgi's claims and legal teams, coverage counsel, defense counsel, TPAs, reinsurers, and senior leadership. The work will move quickly, involve multiple jurisdictions and insurance structures, and often require judgment where the answer is not obvious. What You'll Do Own the handling of complex, high‑severity, and litigated first‑party and third‑party claims across multiple commercial insurance lines. Direct claim investigations, evaluate liability and damages, and develop and document clear resolution strategies. Set and maintain timely, accurate reserves and provide well‑reasoned exposure assessments to claims leadership and senior management. Select, instruct, and manage defense counsel, including litigation strategy, budgets, staffing, written work product, and outcomes. Negotiate settlements directly and through counsel, and participate in mediations, arbitrations, settlement conferences, and trials as needed. Evaluate and respond to time‑limit demands and policy‑limit demands, and manage matters presenting potential bad‑faith or extra‑contractual exposure, escalating promptly when required. Partner with coverage counsel on matters involving reservation‑of‑rights letters, DISCLAIMERS?? Ensure claims are handled in compliance with applicable statutes, regulations, fair claims practices requirements, and company procedures across jurisdictions. Advise on tenders, additional‑insured issues, contractual indemnity, contribution, subrogation, and allocation among carriers. Support reinsurance notice, reporting, and recovery efforts on significant claims. Identify claim trends and recurring issues and partner with underwriting, product, and legal teams to improve policy language, guidelines, and claims processes. Help build and maintain Corgi's litigation management guidelines, counsel panel, escalation procedures, and claims best practices. Develop and deliver training for claims professionals and TPAs on litigation management, evaluation, and emerging legal developments. Monitor material judicial, statutory, and regulatory developments affecting claims handling and litigation across the United States. Who You Are You have a J.D. from an accredited law school and are an active member in good standing of at least one U.S. state bar. You have approximately three to six years of experience handling insurance claims or litigation at a law firm, insurance carrier, TPA, or comparable organization. You have personally evaluated, negotiated, and resolved complex commercial claims, including litigated matters. You understand that a technically correct evaluation is not enough. Your work must be timely, practical, well‑documented, and defensible if later reviewed by a court, regulator, reinsurer, auditor, or opposing counsel. You are a strong writer and communicator. You can distill disputed facts, conflicting law, and imperfect information into a clear evaluation and recommendation. You are comfortable working across multiple lines of insurance rather than limiting your practice to a single product. You can independently identify bad‑faith and extra‑contractual risks and know when an issue requires immediate escalation. You exercise sound judgment with confidential and privileged information. You are highly detail‑oriented and catch inconsistencies in claims files, pleadings, correspondence, and legal analysis that others miss. You are comfortable making decisions in a fast‑moving environment where the facts may be incomplete and the law may vary materially by jurisdiction. You take ownership. When a claim escalates, you identify the missing facts, develop the strategy, provide the recommendation, document the reasoning, and drive the matter to resolution. You communicate directly and effectively with claims professionals, executives, outside counsel, and business teams. Nice to Have Experience with commercial general liability, professional liability, technology E&O, cyber, directors and officers liability, employment practices liability, commercial auto, excess or umbrella liability, property, or specialty insurance. Courtroom, arbitration, or mediation experience, including first‑chair or second‑chair trial experience. Familiarity with risk retention groups, captive insurers, admitted carriers, fronting arrangements, or reinsurance structures. Experience addressing time‑limit demands, policy‑limit demands, consent judgments, assignments, covenants not to execute, or other matters creating significant extra‑contractual exposure. Experience advising a growing insurance company, insurtech, startup, or other highly regulated business. Familiarity with AI‑assisted legal research, claims technology, or the use of structured data and automation in insurance operations. Why Corgi Real Ownership: You will not be one attorney in a large claims department monitoring routine referrals. You will have direct responsibility for significant claims and help build the litigation management infrastructure that supports Corgi's claims organization. Broad, Substantive Work: You will work across insurance products, jurisdictions, entities, claims structures, and legal issues. The role offers exposure that would ordinarily be divided among multiple practice groups or departments. Immediate Impact: Your work will directly affect claim outcomes, litigation strategy, loss costs, policy drafting, reinsurance recoveries, and how Corgi manages legal and regulatory risk. Ground‑Floor Opportunity: Corgi is building its insurance platform and claims function at the same time. You will have the opportunity to create systems, standards, templates, and processes that will scale with the company. High Standards and High Growth: We move quickly, expect excellent work, and give meaningful responsibility to people who deliver. Strong performers will have substantial room to expand their scope as Corgi grows. Compensation and Benefits Base salary of $150,000–$200,000, depending on experience, qualifications, work location, and demonstrated claims expertise. Equity options. Performance‑based compensation opportunities, as applicable. Hybrid work arrangement based out of Corgi's Chicago or Atlanta office, with the specific in‑office schedule to be discussed during the hiring process. Corgi Insurance is an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to any status protected by applicable federal, state, or local law. #J-18808-Ljbffr
