Cardiac or Cardiovascular Sonographer

Position Summary Cardiovascular Sonographers provide professional, safe, and compassionate ultrasound imaging care to all patient populations. They are uniquely trained in the advanced understanding of ultrasound physics and instrumentation, allowing them to optimize the ultrasound controls for the highest quality image acquisition. The sonographer is able to identify and evaluate the appropriate anatomical and physiological consequences consistent with disease processes, adapting routine protocols to accommodate a wide range of patients and disease states. The sonographer manages the initiation of critical value notification to expedite optimal patient outcomes. Position Title Cardiac or Cardiovascular Sonographer Responsibilities Obtain patient history and perform pre‑ultrasound procedure assessment. Verify that the ordered exam is consistent with patient history, indication, and assessment findings, clarifying the procedure with the ordering physician as needed. Assume responsibility for patient safety, mental and physical comfort, and communication throughout the exam. Perform routine and complex cardiac ultrasound procedures including echocardiograms, stress echocardiograms (treadmill, dobutamine echo, bicycle ergonometry). Perform vascular imaging (carotid duplex, upper/lower venous/arterial, abdominal aorta, renal, venous insufficiency, vein mapping). Demonstrate understanding of imaging planes obtained during a TEE exam and assist the physician in accurate acquisition of images from the esophagus. At the KU location complete appropriate TEE probe cleaning and disinfection. Perform professional, clinical, and technical competencies of assigned location, be available for onsite echocardiographic services as assigned, and provide emergent services under a cardiologist’s direction. Identify and evaluate the appropriate anatomical and physiological consequences consistent with disease processes, initiating any additional enhancements unless otherwise noted by the ordering physician. Apply cognitive and psychomotor skills to accurately and efficiently obtain vascular and echocardiographic images and relevant hemodynamic information. Organize acquired data in appropriate sequence for accurate representation of the patient’s condition. In presence of critical values, document and communicate to the interpreting physician, and assist in evaluation of data. Provide quality, constructive feedback on peer‑to‑peer case study review as part of the departmental QI program; return QI studies in a timely manner. Help maintain efficient patient flow by collaborating with team members. Complete mandatory educational assignments as outlined by the department director. Participate in education and training of sonographer students, residents, medical students, and fellows, providing instruction in cardiovascular ultrasound procedures. Assess need for ultrasound enhancing agents (UEA) and bubble studies; administer and document IVs, UEA, and bubble studies when performed. Assist with sonographer‑guided thrombin injection procedures performed in the cath laboratory under a cardiologist’s direction. Perform routine and complex peripheral vascular scans, including abdominal aorta, complete lower extremities, carotid arteries, renal arteries, and transcranial arteries. Assist with the assessment and maintenance of the equipment log; make service calls, resolve issues, document in the appropriate log, and notify the director/manager promptly. Maintain cleanliness of supplies, stock linen, and empty laundry daily. Perform the professional, clinical, and technical competencies of the assigned unit or department. Required Education and Experience High School Graduate One or more years of cardiovascular ultrasound clinical experience as a Registered Cardiac and Vascular Sonographer, independently performing stress echo procedures, including treadmill and pharmacological. Preferred Education and Experience Graduate of a CAAHEP; JRC‑DMS program in cardiac ultrasound Graduate of a programmatically accredited program in cardiac ultrasound/echocardiography Graduate of a diploma, associate, or baccalaureate program in Health Science (including, but not limited to, cardiovascular technology, ultrasound, radiologic technology, respiratory therapy, or nursing) Training or certification in IV and UEA contrast administration Required Licensure and Certification Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS or BCLS) – American Heart Association (AHA) Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT) – American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) OR Registered Vascular Specialist (RVS) – Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) – American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) OR Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) – Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) Knowledge Requirements Basic computer skills Ability to train in area of competency Maintain CME requirements Time Type Part time Job Requisition ID R-54511 Important Information For You To Know As You Apply The health system is an equal employment opportunity employer.
