Location: Milpitas, CA
Pay Rate: Up to $32.00/hr
Schedule: Monday–Friday, 6:00 AM–2:30 PM

Position Overview

The Instrument Test Technician 2 conducts production testing of assembled flow cytometers and related medical device products. This role performs system-level and subassembly-level testing, troubleshooting, optimization, and inspection across electronic, mechanical, optical, fluidic, and electromechanical systems.

The technician is responsible for identifying root causes of defects, implementing corrective actions, documenting test results, and producing quality products on schedule. This position requires detailed technical knowledge, independent judgment, initiative, and the ability to work effectively with assemblers, technicians, Quality Assurance personnel, engineers, and other cross-functional teams.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform instrument optimization after final assembly, including laser alignment, pressure adjustments, and electrical adjustments.
• Conduct final production testing and inspection to ensure products meet performance specifications and quality standards.
• Analyze test results from defective units to identify root causes and determine appropriate corrective actions.
• Troubleshoot system-level and subassembly-level issues involving electronic, mechanical, optical, fluidic, and electromechanical systems.
• Replace or repair defective components and assemblies and return units to assembly for repair when necessary.
• Compare test results against specifications and accurately record test data, measurements, and test-result plots.
• Generate required documentation for Device History Records (DHR).
• Read and interpret detailed test instructions, assembly instructions, work orders, test results, Bills of Materials (BOMs), Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and other controlled documentation.
• Work with engineers, technicians, production personnel, and other departments to resolve testing and product issues.
• Develop and document troubleshooting techniques and provide feedback regarding production and test methods.
• Identify product design and process issues and contribute to continuous improvements in product quality and operational efficiency.
• Support project teams working on quality improvement, cost reduction, cycle-time reduction, reliability improvement, operational efficiency, and new product introduction initiatives.
• Assist with creating and updating process and product documentation.
• Collect, document, and review key measurements and performance data.
• Collaborate with team members and other functions to achieve shared departmental goals.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
• Accurately complete timesheets, required paperwork, and training documentation.
• Follow all applicable safety procedures and programs.
• Be willing to train in other production areas as needed.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required Knowledge & Skills

• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to apply mathematical concepts including fractions, percentages, ratios, proportions, probability, statistical inference, and basic geometry.
• Good mechanical aptitude, manual dexterity, and hand-eye coordination.
• Ability to reach, bend, and lift up to 35 lbs. on a daily basis.
• Experience using digital voltmeters (DVMs), oscilloscopes, and general electronic test equipment.
• Strong PC or Mac computer skills.
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Windows, and/or Mac OS.
• Ability to understand and follow safety procedures and programs.
• Knowledge or exposure to ISO 9000 and cGMP 21 CFR Part 820 requirements.
• Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills.
• Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively in a team-oriented manufacturing environment.

Education & Experience

• Associate's degree (A.S.) or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school.
• 3+ years of related experience in a high-tech manufacturing environment.
• Experience working in a medical device manufacturing organization preferred.
• Experience testing and troubleshooting laser-based optical systems, fluidic systems, and digital and analog circuitry.
• Extensive knowledge of PCs and networking environments.
• Strong experience with Microsoft Excel, Visio, and PowerPoint.
• Strong knowledge of ISO 9000 and cGMP 21 CFR Part 820.
• Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma tools and concepts, and Demand Flow Technology (DFT).
• Strong experience using logic analyzers and oscilloscopes.
• Experience with electronic, mechanical, optical, fluidic, and electromechanical systems preferred.
