Traffic Systems Technician — Outdoor ITS Specialist

Essential Duties Assist in installing, maintaining, modifying, adjusting, testing, troubleshooting, inspecting, and repairing electronic traffic control, communication, traffic data collection, and illumination systems. Assist in installing, troubleshooting, and maintaining hardware and software for traffic systems, Intelligent Transportation Systems, and the Statewide Traffic Analysis and Reporting System. Assist in monitoring and maintaining clear work zones and cleaning construction sites upon completion. Assist in operating, maintaining, and servicing equipment such as bucket trucks, drilling and pole‑setting rigs, concrete saws, trenching machines, cable‑locating instruments, insulation testers, and 18‑wheel calibration trucks. Follow applicable safety procedures when working near high‑voltage lines, gas, water, sewage lines, and heavy traffic. Learn to identify, troubleshoot, solve problems, and recognize potential site characteristics. Respond to emergency situations to assist with repair and maintenance of traffic signals, systems, lighting, or data collection equipment. Perform other job responsibilities as assigned. Additional Duties for Traffic Systems Technician II Assist in designing and reviewing traffic signal, data collection, and illumination design projects. Identify and troubleshoot potential new site characteristics. Inspect construction methods, workmanship, and maintenance procedures to ensure compliance with plans and contract requirements. Install, maintain, and replace TV cameras, motorized LED and fiber‑optic signs, cables; monitor communication devices; relocate related equipment as required. Installs, maintains, and repairs electronic traffic control, communication, and data collection systems. Operate and service equipment such as bucket trucks, rigs, saws, trenching machines, and calibration trucks. Prepare written reports providing feedback on system installation, inventory needs, and encountered issues. Assist in working with governmental and private entities concerning utilities and right‑of‑way. Respond to emergency situations for repair and maintenance of traffic signals, systems, lighting, or data collection equipment. Perform other job responsibilities as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Education : High School Graduate or equivalent in general high school studies. Experience Traffic Systems Technician I No experience required. Traffic Systems Technician II 1 year of construction, electronic troubleshooting, electrical construction/installation, electromechanical, traffic management, or transportation engineering experience. Full‑time or prorated part‑time service counts toward the requirement. Licenses and Certifications Valid driver’s license at the time of application. Must possess a Commercial Class A driver’s license or obtain a CDL A within 120 calendar days of employment. Military or Veterans: US military CDL equivalent candidates must obtain a Texas Class A CDL within 120 days of employment. Competencies Traffic Systems Technician I Some knowledge of applicable plans, specifications, estimates, construction equipment operations, Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, electrical construction procedures, safety standards, and hazardous materials management. Proficient in using, maintaining, and repairing trade tools and equipment; safely operating and maintaining equipment; and maintaining effective relationships with others. Some skill in communicating technical information, interpreting information, using computers and electronic test equipment. Ability to follow instructions, work with up to 600 volts, move up to 50 pounds, and follow safety standards. Traffic Systems Technician II Considerable knowledge of applicable plans, specifications, estimates, traffic engineering terminology, construction equipment, Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, electrical construction procedures, database design, traffic flow principles, digital data communications, CCTV, plan reading, data collection, and software. Extensive skill in communicating, interpreting, using computers, test equipment, hand and power tools, and repairing equipment; preparing confidential records and reports; maintaining safety; and building effective relationships. Ability to follow instructions, work with up to 600 volts, move up to 50 pounds, and follow safety standards. Exercise logic and reasoning to define problems, establish facts, and make decisions supporting business goals. Physical Requirements and Working Conditions Traffic Systems Technician I Sedentary work: lift up to 10 lbs, occasionally carry files or small tools. Light work: lift up to 20 lbs, frequently lift or carry objects up to 10 lbs. Medium work: lift up to 50 lbs, frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs. Climbing and balancing tasks (ladder, stairs, scaffoldings, ramps). Standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, reaching, and other typical tasks. Close visual acuity tasks: reading data, inspecting parts, using measurement devices, operating machines and vehicles. Traffic Systems Technician II Subject to environmental conditions with limited weather protection. Same physical tasks as Technician I, but also exposure to extreme temperatures above 100°F or below 32°F for extended periods. Conditions of Employment Physically demanding; requires a pre‑employment physical. Must pass a drug test; this is a safety‑impact position subject to random testing. Must be able to report to duty within 30 minutes of notification on a 24‑hour basis for emergencies.
