About the Job
The Coordinator of the Curriculum - French and Italian supports the design, coordination, implementation, and continuous improvement of the department's lower-division language curriculum in collaboration with the Director of Language Instruction and departmental leadership (DUS, DIS, Chair). This position provides project leadership and professional expertise in curriculum development, instructional support, assessment development, advising, and educational program coordination across the French and Italian language programs. Successful candidates will demonstrate strong organizational, pedagogical, and collaborative skills, as well as expertise in language instruction, instructional technologies, and student support in higher education settings.
Location and Work environment: In person, on TC campus, Folwell Hall Work Schedule: Standard 40-hr, 12-month position Primary Responsibilities: Normal instructional duties (33%, two courses per year): Fulfills appointments that are 19 weeks per AY semester (including 15 class weeks + finals week).Carries out in-class teaching of students. Prepares lessons for courses taught. Grades homework, maintains grade books, and completes other paper- or computer-work and record keeping associated with instruction. Holds office hours and/or general tutorial hours as specified by the department.
Assists with materials development for courses taught. These duties include giving timely feedback to the cohort teaching group, when applicable, on collaboratively authored course materials such as quizzes, exams, essay assignments, etc.
Carries out testing duties associated with the EPT (Entrance Proficiency Test) and LPE (Language Proficiency Exam) as specified by the department.
Handles student inquiries as appropriate to the appointment.
Provides letters of recommendation for students as requested.
Participates in periodic department meetings and/or training sessions, plenaries, and department/college/university workshops. In addition to standard instructional responsibilities, the Coordinator of the Curriculum in FRIT carries out the following: Curriculum Coordination, Instructional Support, and Program Operations (50%) To the extent possible given linguistic specificities:
- Coordinates the implementation of lower-division French and Italian curricula, ensuring alignment with program objectives, proficiency standards, and current best practices in language pedagogy.
- Develops, maintains and revises shared course calendars, instructional
materials, and LMS structures across multiple course sequences and scheduling
formats. - Designs and maintains shared assessment frameworks (quizzes, projects,
participation assessments, rubrics, and grading standards) to support
consistency and measurable learning outcomes across sections. - Develops and revises online content and technology-enhanced learning
resources, including asynchronous instructional components and integrated
learning platforms. - Applies instructional design principles and emerging research in second
language acquisition to curriculum development, course revision, and
instructional innovation. - Implements targeted curriculum updates and rapid course redesign in response to
changing pedagogical, technological, or institutional contexts, in coordination with the DLI. - Fosters a collaborative instructional environment through shared teaching
resources, cohort meetings, onboarding, orientations, and ongoing pedagogical
support for instructors. - Participates in instructor assessment and development through classroom
observations, mentoring, individualized feedback, and professional development
support for graduate instructors, P&As, and faculty. -
Serves as a resource for instructors and students regarding curricular questions,
placement concerns, and instructional issues in coordination with the DLI and
departmental leadership.
Advising and Student Support (10%)
- Advises undergraduate students on major/minor requirements, study abroad,
capstones, transfer credit, placement, and academic progress in order to support
retention and timely degree completion. - Maintains and audits APAS records for French and Italian majors/minors,
including transfer and study abroad coursework. - Supports recruitment and outreach through course visits, transfer orientations,
information sessions, and collaboration on publicity and enrollment initiatives. - Serves as a consistent point of contact for prospective and current students
regarding curricular pathways and academic planning.
Professional Engagement and Development (7%)
- Maintain expertise in language pedagogy, instructional technology, and
curriculum development through ongoing professional development and
engagement with current research and best practices. - Engages in research-informed curriculum design, assessment practices, and
instructor development models. - Participate in departmental meetings, committees, and educational initiatives
related to language instruction, curriculum, and undergraduate education. - Offers occasional workshops related to graduate instructor training and language pedagogy.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Ba/BS degree in French and/or Italian plus at least 5 years of related experience or, Master's degree plus at least three years of related experience.
- Experience teaching lower-division language courses at the college or university level.
- Experience coordinating multi-section language courses or educational programs, including curriculum development, assessment, and instructor support.
- Experience supervising, mentoring, or evaluating instructors, graduate instructors, or teaching assistants.
- Demonstrated knowledge of current research and best practices in second language pedagogy and assessment.
- Experience with instructional technologies and learning management systems (e.g., Canvas, Connect).
- Strong organizational, communication, and project management skills, including the ability to manage multiple priorities and collaborate across constituencies.
Preferred Qualifications:
- PhD or other terminal degree in a relevant field.
- Experience with hybrid, asynchronous, or technology-enhanced language instruction.
- Evidence of professional engagement through conference presentations, workshops, publications, or curricular initiatives related to language pedagogy or instructional innovation.
- Familiarity with proficiency-oriented instruction and national standards in world language education.
- Experience advising undergraduate students in higher education settings.
