Vice President, DemocracyReports to: Senior Vice President, Structural Reform and Governance Staff reporting to this position: Democracy team Department: Structural Reform and Governance Position classification: Exempt, full time; Nonunion - Level 9 Compensation range: $140,000–$168,000 per annum Work site: On-site (Washington, D.C., office)SummaryThe Vice President for Democracy will lead the Democracy team and coordinate American Progress' crosscutting, organization-wide priority to restore social trust in democracy. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of a range of relevant topics—including approaches to effectively fight corruption, safeguard free and fair elections, create effective institutions of government, strengthen the rule of law, and build a multiracial democracy that is reflective of all Americans. The successful candidate will have experience with policy creation and analysis, familiarity with legislative and regulatory processes, and the ability to develop and maintain relationships with senior policymakers in Washington, D.C.In partnership with the Senior Vice President, the Vice President will manage American Progress' relationships with outside stakeholders on democracy-related issues, including ally organizations, policymakers, and the media. The Vice President will lead strategy development to turn ideas into action, engaging with staff throughout American Progress as well as outside coalitions and other organizations.Responsibilities:Provide day-to-day management and mentorship for the Democracy team, developing its policy, research, and communications agenda and products to ensure relevant participation in policy debates.Work with the department's Senior Vice President and the Executive team to set the strategic direction for democracy policy, including development of crosscutting efforts.Coordinate internal projects related to democracy policy to ensure collaboration and alignment with organization-level priorities.Author and co-author policy papers, columns, and opinion pieces.Represent the Democracy team and American Progress to the public, the media, Congress, and other elected leaders.Manage the Democracy team's budget and assist with fundraising efforts to meet the team's policy work plan.Update staff on news and events related to relevant policy debates.Perform other duties as assigned.Requirements and qualifications:Commitment to American Progress' mission and goals.A bachelor's degree is required; a law degree or other relevant advanced degree is strongly preferred.At least 10 years of relevant professional experience.Extensive knowledge and experiential expertise of federal policymaking as well as a proven track record as a senior leader in the democracy policy field.Established relationships with policymakers, advocates, and community leaders.Exceptional management, analytical, presentation, written, and oral communication skills and experience, including with reporters and the media.Strong political instincts and experience working with coalitions.American Progress offers a full and competitive benefits package.
