Senior Accountant - Nonprofit

Scion Staffing has been engaged to conduct a search for a Senior Accountant on behalf of a mission-driven, nationally recognized nonprofit organization advancing research, patient care, and public health. This is a direct-hire opportunity based in New York City, offering a collaborative environment and meaningful impact. POSITION OVERVIEW The Senior Accountant will report directly to the Controller and play a critical role in managing and overseeing day-to-day accounting operations. This position is responsible for ensuring accurate financial reporting, maintaining compliance with GAAP, and supporting the organization’s financial health through analysis, reconciliation, and reporting. The ideal candidate brings strong nonprofit accounting experience, attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate cross-functionally across departments. PERKS Hybrid work environment (2 remote days per week) Generous PTO and paid holidays Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision benefits 403(b) with employer contribution Wellness offerings including meditation sessions Opportunity to support a mission-driven organization with global impact RESPONSIBILITIES Oversee and coordinate all accounting activities, including recording, reconciliation, and financial reporting Ensure accuracy and compliance with GAAP across general ledger transactions Reconcile and manage financial activity across systems including Stripe, PayPal, Braintree, and banking platforms Collaborate cross-functionally to reconcile and troubleshoot financial data across systems such as Salesforce and accounting platforms Review contracts, grants, donor agreements, and MOUs to ensure proper revenue recognition Manage grant accounting, including budgeting, tracking, reporting, and compliance with funding requirements Prepare and analyze monthly financial reports, project budgets, and grant-related financials Perform monthly cash reconciliations and monitor AR/AP aging reports Support internal controls, audits, and financial compliance initiatives Assist with tax filings including sales tax, UBIT, and preparation of Form 990 Support year-end audits and provide required documentation and schedules Recommend and implement process improvements to enhance financial operations QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field required 5+ years of accounting or finance experience Nonprofit accounting experience strongly preferred Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting Experience with accounting systems and financial databases (Intacct preferred) Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills Excellent communication and interpersonal skills Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines High level of integrity and ability to handle confidential information COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS Salary range: $90,000 – $95,000 annually , commensurate with experience Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision benefits 403(b) with employer contribution Generous paid holidays and paid time off Hybrid schedule with two remote days each week Wellness offerings, including meditation sessions For opportunities located in a region that has enacted fair chance, arrest, or conviction based employment ordinances, Scion Nonprofit Staffing proactively follows the enacted guidance and considers for employment all qualified applications with arrest and conviction records.
