Collections Attorney - In House

Collections AttorneyPosition OverviewWe are seeking a results-oriented Collections Attorney to manage firm invoice collections, through effective negotiation and litigation. The ideal candidate will oversee the full collection lifecycle from account review and demand correspondence to post-judgment enforcement while maintaining compliance with federal and state laws and optimizing recoveries for clients. This is an in house position with a law firm.Key ResponsibilitiesManage a portfolio of delinquent accounts, review payment history and account documentation, and develop strategic collection plans.Draft and send demand letters, settlement letters, and correspondence to debtors and third parties.Initiate and prosecute collection litigation, including preparing complaints, motions, discovery, and attending hearings and trials as needed.Negotiate settlements and structured payment arrangements with debtors to maximize recoveries while minimizing litigation costs.Pursue post-judgment remedies such as garnishments, levies, executions, and lien filings; coordinate enforcement across jurisdictions.Work closely with clients, outside counsel, and internal teams to provide case updates, recovery forecasts, and strategic recommendations.Ensure compliance with the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA), state statutes, court rules, and internal policies; maintain accurate case and receivables records.Use case management and e-filing systems to manage dockets, deadlines, and reporting; prepare regular recovery and activity reports for stakeholders.Represent clients at mediations, settlement conferences, and hearings; prepare exhibits and witness materials as necessary.QualificationsJuris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school and active admission to NJ & NY bars3+ years of experience in collections, debt recovery, or related Demonstrated skills in debt recovery, collections processes, drafting settlement letters, and negotiating payment arrangements.Proven litigation experience, including preparing court filings, managing discovery, and conducting hearings or trials.Experience with post-judgment enforcement techniques (garnishments, levies, lien enforcement) and receivables management.Strong understanding of FDCPA, state debt collection laws, civil procedure, and evidence rules.Excellent written and oral communication skills, strong negotiation ability, and attention to detail.Proficiency with litigation/case management software, e-filing systems, and Microsoft Office; comfort working with billing and reporting systems.High ethical standards, client-service orientation, ability to manage competing priorities, and a track record of delivering measurable recoveries.Preferred: prior experience working with large creditor portfolios, knowledge of multiple state statutes, or bilingual skills relevant to the client base.Benefits- Medical, dental & vision insurance- 401k- PTO- Bonus- Hybrid - Growth opportunities- Competitive Salary ($200,000-$250,000/year DOE)
