Senior Mechanical Engineer

• Front-End Engineering, EPCM and EPC Services : Providing support to developers on all aspects of projects across finance and development – from the conceptual phase to front-end engineering to structure robust RFP packages for optimum EPC pricing – and detail design engineering, procurement and construction management services to support post-financial close. Partnering with local, regional and national construction companies, Nexus PMG can provide complete plant solutions through delivery, commissioning and operations.
• Operations and Field Services : Ensuring project success from execution to operations with operational readiness and performance improvement services including a proprietary benchmarking tool that can perform readiness assessments as well as comprehensive project turnarounds; tailored programs for commissioning and start-up support for technologically diverse projects; and targeted performance improvement initiatives for existing facilities.

The Senior Mechanical Engineer leads mechanical design and engineering delivery for capital projects in the energy, industrial, and infrastructure markets, from feasibility through commissioning. The role owns process flow diagrams, piping and instrumentation diagrams, equipment specifications, hydraulic and thermal calculations, 3D models, and construction drawings. The engineer coordinates with process, electrical, civil, structural, and controls disciplines, procurement, construction management, and equipment vendors. The successful candidate carries a project from equipment concept through mechanical completion and closes out the design record.

The Senior Mechanical Engineer will report to the Vice President of Engineering or Project Manager depending on project assignment. Location is in our Greenville SC office.

Key Responsibilities

Design and Analysis

• Develop mechanical basis of design, equipment lists, and load and duty summaries for capital equipment packages.
• Produce equipment arrangement drawings.
• Perform hydraulic, pressure drop, pump and blower sizing, net positive suction head, thermal expansion, and document assumptions and margins.
• Size and specify pumps, blowers, compressors, fans, heat exchangers, tanks, pressure vessels, agitators, dryers, conveyors, dust collection systems, and skidded equipment packages.
• Build and maintain coordinated 3D models in Autodesk Plant 3D and Revit, and lead clash detection and model review cycles in Navisworks.
• Extract isometrics, spool drawings, material takeoffs, and construction deliverables from the model.

Piping and Mechanical Systems

• Develop piping specifications, line lists, valve schedules, and material selection matrices by service and design condition.
• Provide guidance and review to Designers for routing piping for constructability, maintenance access, drainage, venting, and thermal growth.
• Design pipe supports, guides, anchors, and expansion loops.
• Specify insulation, heat tracing, coatings, and corrosion protection.
• Define hydrostatic and pneumatic test requirements, tie-in details, and mechanical completion criteria.

Project Execution

• Serve as discipline lead on EPC and FEED projects, controlling scope, hours, schedule, and deliverable quality against the project execution plan.
• Prepare and defend engineering estimates, deliverable registers, and man-hour budgets.
• Prepare equipment datasheets and requisitions, evaluate technical bids, and issue technical bid tabulations.
• Review vendor submittals, factory acceptance test procedures, and shop drawings; resolve technical deviations.
• Respond to requests for information, field change requests, and construction queries; issue as-built revisions.
• Support commissioning, startup, and performance testing, including equipment alignment verification, loop checks, capacity test review, and punch list resolution.

Compliance and Codes

• Design to ASME B31.1 and B31.3, ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section VIII, API 610, 620, and 650, Hydraulic Institute standards, AWWA standards, the International Mechanical Code, the International Plumbing Code, and applicable NFPA standards.
• Apply OSHA process safety management and NFPA 652 and 654 combustible dust requirements where the process warrants.
• Support hazard and operability studies, layer of protection analysis, and design reviews, and close the resulting actions.
• Seal and issue drawings and calculations as Engineer of Record where licensure permits.

Technical Leadership

• Check the work of junior and mid-level engineers and designers.
• Mentor engineering staff and CAD designers, and set discipline standards, templates, and calculation methods.
• Present technical positions to clients, lenders, independent engineers, and authorities having jurisdiction.

Required Qualifications

Education

• Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from an EAC-ABET accredited University.
• Coursework or demonstrated depth in fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, heat transfer, and machine design.

Experience

• Ten+ years’ experience in industrial, energy, process, or infrastructure facilities.
• Five+ years’ experience with an engineering, procurement, and construction organization, an owner's engineer, or an AE of Record firm delivering capital equipment projects.
• Demonstrated responsibility for capital equipment scopes, including specification, procurement support, installation design, and commissioning.
• Experience across renewable fuels and biogas, water and wastewater treatment, energy generation or storage, hydrogen, food and agricultural processing, or heavy industrial manufacturing, a plus.

Software

• Autodesk suite proficiency is preferred, including AutoCAD, Revit, and Plant 3D.
• Navisworks for model coordination and clash detection.
• Microsoft Excel at an advanced level.

Technical Skills

• Hydraulic network analysis and pump curve and system curve matching.
• Rotating equipment selection, sealing systems, lubrication, and vibration considerations.
• Pressure vessel and tank design review, nozzle loading, and foundation load reporting to the structural discipline.
• Material selection for corrosive, abrasive, and high-temperature service.
• Weld procedure, nondestructive examination, and inspection requirement specification.
• Cost estimating, quantity takeoffs, and constructability review.

Professional Skills

• Technical writing for review by independent engineers, lenders, and regulators.
• Direct client communication, including presentation of design decisions and resolution of technical disputes.
• Coordination across concurrent projects and competing schedules.
• Judgment on when to escalating risk, and documentation of assumptions and open items.

Preferred Qualifications

• Active Professional Engineer license in at least one U.S. jurisdiction, or ability to obtain license within 3 to 6 months is preferred.
• Process and utility piping design experience.
• Ability to perform pipe stress analysis in CAESAR II or an equivalent platform.
• Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering.
• Experience with anaerobic digestion, renewable natural gas, gas conditioning, hydrogen, or carbon capture process equipment.
• Experience with abrasive blast and industrial coating facilities, including abrasive recovery, dust collection, and ventilation design.
• Experience with FEED-phase deliverables, Class 3 estimates, and front-end loading gate reviews.
• Experience with modular and skid-mounted equipment design and transport limitations.
• Experience supporting federal grant, DOE loan program, or tax equity technical due diligence.
• Finite element or computational fluid dynamics analysis experience.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

• This position works from the Greenville, SC office five days per week. Remote and hybrid arrangements are not available for this position.
• Site visits occur on active construction sites and require personal protective equipment, ascent of ladders and stairs, and work in extreme heat, cold, and dust.
• The role occasionally requires extended hours during proposal periods, submittal milestones, and commissioning.
