Staff Accountant

The Staff Accountant is responsible for meeting departmental processing deadlines. Accounting tasks include cash accounting, monthly closing, reconciliation of various general ledger accounts, and preparing financial statements. This individual should be fully knowledgeable of the accounting software and be able to train/assist other staff. This individual may work closely with all areas of the Museum regarding accounting issues. All positions at Discovery Lab are required to assist with front-line operations as needed and may be assigned other duties as applicable by their direct supervisor. This position description is representative of the major position requirements and is not intended to be all-inclusive. Prepare journal entries: daily Altru entry, invoices and banking activity; bi-monthly payroll; and month-end processes, including limited revenue invoices. Process vendors payments (check, ACH or online payments) as necessary. Resolve vendor issues as necessary. Reconcile bank account and general ledger accounts and make adjusting journal entries as necessary. Prepare monthly financial statements for the Finance & Audit Committee and Board, including variance explanations. Prepare year-end entries and year-end audit schedules, working closely with outside auditors during the annual audit. Process calendar year reports, such as 1099’s. System administration and user training for NXT and Ramp, including P-cards. Assist with the development and implementation of reports/analysis as requested. Assist in reviewing accounting processes and proposing changes to improve efficiency and/or control. Assist in developing new procedures and controls throughout the museum as requested. Maintain a paperless filing system for financial information. What You’ll Need Ability to plan work, work independently, and consistently meet deadlines Attention to detail and accuracy Excellent interpersonal and communication skills Working knowledge or ability to learn nonprofit accounting principles, including GAAP standards. Working knowledge or ability to learn Blackbaud NXT and other accounting software. Bachelor’s degree in accounting or equivalent combination of education and experience. How you’ll work This position is regular, full-time, and nonexempt with a typical schedule of Monday – Friday. Occasional after-hours or weekends may be required. Shared office environment. Classification Nonexempt Salary Range $21.29 - $29.81 per hour Reports to Director of Finance & Support Physical Demands 85% sitting, 10% standing, 5% lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling not more than 10-30 lbs.
