Safety & Security Communications Specialist

Responsibilities Receives and responds to emergency and non‑emergency calls via telephone and radio systems. Coordinates with appropriate agencies for emergency situations, including on‑campus fire and medical calls. Processes and evaluates information received, prioritizes calls, and dispatches security personnel as needed or required. Monitors security camera systems for multiple campus sites and alerts security personnel to suspicious activity or persons. Monitors fire alarm panels and dispatches security or fire department personnel. Maintains accurate and detailed records of calls for service, incidents, emergencies, alarm calls and alarm status. Conveys appropriate and timely information to responding units to prepare them to handle the situation upon arrival. Enters parking permits and parking citations into the parking management system. Provides clerical support to the Safety and Security department. Responds to information requests from the College community regarding general questions in a timely, efficient, and professional manner. Performs other duties as may be required or assigned. Required Qualifications Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma. Active and current certification in CPR, First Aid, and AED. If not currently certified, must become certified within 6 months of employment and complete 3 Public Safety Telecommunications Basic training courses within 6 months of employment. Valid Florida driver’s license or the ability to obtain a Florida driver’s license within 30 days of employment, with an acceptable driving record. Desired Qualifications Experience operating radio communications systems, including Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) and portable radios. Experienced switchboard operator, cell center, or dispatcher. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Ability to utilize technology such as computers, radio systems, telephones, fax machines, fire panel, and other communications equipment. Ability to become proficient in directing calls in a timely and efficient manner. Ability to maintain appropriate security and confidentiality of information. Skill in multi‑tasking, coordinating simultaneous mental, manual, and visual activities. Strong Microsoft Office 365 skills (Outlook, Word, Excel) and other applicable software programs (e.g., security camera and access control) and the ability to become proficient in Teams/Zoom. Ability to exercise initiative, prioritize tasks, and use independent judgment within procedural boundaries. Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills. Ability to think clearly and act quickly in emergencies. Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment. Ability to exhibit a professional, courteous demeanor. Committed to working in a multi‑cultural environment. Work Environment and Special Considerations Work inside in an office environment. Work includes walking, standing, bending, and carrying light items. Ability to sit for long periods of time at a telephone and dispatch console. Required to drive College vehicles. Special Requirements In‑residence telephone service or cell phone. Dependable transportation. Pay and Work Schedule $15.58 hourly up to 26 hours per week. Conditions of Employment Finalists and individuals recommended for employment at Seminole State College must reside in the State of Florida at the time of hire and may be subject to background investigations and fingerprinting in compliance with Florida Statute 1001.64; and Seminole State College Policy 1.020; 2.020. Criminal background checks and fingerprinting will be conducted for all new employees, and for rehired employees who have had a break in service for one year or more. The Office of Human Resources will determine which background checks shall be conducted for each position, based upon its review of job descriptions and the responsibilities of the position. These include, but are not limited to, positions that have access to money, master keys, security‑sensitive areas and confidential information; positions that have the capability to create, delete, and alter records; and positions that are responsible for the care and instruction of children. The College will conduct various types of background checks which may include, but are not limited to: criminal background, credit check, driver’s license check, previous employment and references. College Cell Phone Use The College anticipates that the position incumbent must be available throughout the workday and, on some occasions, after regular work hours. Therefore, as a condition of employment, the incumbent is expected to be available by cell phone and is required to provide their current cell phone number to the Office of Human Resources and to their immediate supervisor.
