Maintenance Mechanic

You will serve as a MAINTENANCE MECHANIC in the Production Resources Department (900), Production Resources Manager (901), Service Shop (990) of NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD. Major Duties You will perform a variety of tasks involved in the servicing and upkeep of vessels and maintenance of radiologically controlled buildings You will plan and lay out the installation, modification, and repair of various new and existing piping systems and equipment. You will operate and maintain HVAC systems and ductwork/vent inside radiological controlled areas. You will rearrange old or install new outlets, relays, switches, and light fixtures. You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs. This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time. You will be required to climb ladders and scaffolding. You will be required to distinguish between colors and shades of colors. You will be required to lift/carry up to 50 pounds in weight. You will be required to obtain and maintain a radiological worker qualification. You will be required to work protracted or irregular hours of work. You will be required to operate a truck, tractor, or vehicle. Qualifications Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. I have the ability to perform the most difficult and complex tasks including interpreting and applying building plans and blueprints; utilizing shop mathematics to plan, compute, and layout projects. I have the ability to perform the full range of tasks including being skilled in the use of tools and equipment common to the trade and be skilled in the safety precautions, principals, and work methods associated with a maintenance mechanic; utilizing tools and equipment common to the trade. I have the ability to perform common tasks including utilizing knowledge of the physical exterior and interior configurations of a large variety of submarines and surface ships; maintaining tools and equipment of the trade. I work under close supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed.
