United Baptist Church Pastor Job Description

Job Purpose

The Pastor serves as the shepherd of the parishioners of United Baptist Church; spiritually feeding, leading, and nurturing the congregation. The Pastor is primarily responsible for communicating God’s Word, ministering to spiritual needs, and providing biblical leadership for the Church.

Duties and Responsibilities

The duties listed below are the essential functions of the Pastor:

A. Preaching and Worship Leader

1. Prepares and delivers messages that are Biblically based, creative, and thought provoking to challenge the congregation to become fully devoted followers of Christ.
2. Leads evangelism efforts through preaching and giving invitations during worship services, revival, special church events, visitation, and outreach efforts.
3. Oversees planning special worship programs and events.
4. Performs sacraments such as Communion, Baptism, Baby Dedication, and extends Right Hand of Fellowship.

B. Visioning and Discipleship

1. Provides leadership for the church.
2. Directs plans for ministry and Church growth, develops and fine tunes the Church vision and mission based on the agreed upon philosophy of the congregation.
3. Ensures that all classes (Bible Study, Sunday School, etc.) introduce basic biblical doctrines.

C. Staff Relations

1. Leads the ministerial staff.
2. • a. Oversees Church discipline and manages conflict in the Church.
   • b. Seeks to reconcile relationships and promotes unity within the Church.

D. Pastoral Care

1. Motivates, equips, and nurtures the members of the Church through leading by example, preaching and teaching God’s Word.
2. Contacts/visits hospitalized or grieving Church members.
3. Officiates at weddings and funerals.
4. Provides premarital counseling, counseling regarding salvation and spiritual issues, and other forms of counseling for Church members.

Qualifications/Experience

A. The incumbent for this position must:

1. Be licensed and ordained.
2. Bachelor's degree required, Master’s degree preferred from an accredited seminary.
3. Must have previous pastoral experience.

Working Conditions

• A. May be required to travel during the week to visit sick parishioners in the hospitals and at home for grieving families.
• B. Schedule regular office hours.
• C. Provides a means to be contacted (i.e., cell phone, email, etc.) during emergencies or when there is a specific need to be contacted by parishioners.
