Division Head of OphthalmologyThe Division Head of Ophthalmology's responsibilities will include a combination of administrative, clinical, research and educational duties. The Division head is responsible for the overall day to day management of a broad range of clinical and educational activities, administrative and strategic efforts. This role will provide visionary and innovative leadership to guide the division into the next phase of growth and development while ensuring the delivery of superior and comprehensive clinical Ophthalmology care in a rapidly changing medical landscape. The Division Head will be expected to lead a team of Physicians, Advanced Practice Providers and health care staff of the Division and work collaboratively with the Medical Director of the Division (if there is a medical director) and other Divisions in carrying out the mission of the Organization. Additionally, the Division Head will be responsible for encouraging academic advancement within the Division as well as monitoring overall divisional budget, strategy and fostering an environment of professionalism.Leadership and Management Responsibilities• Develop and execute a strategic vision for the division while building and enhancing the division's clinical enterprise.• Provides leadership, medical oversight, clinical supervision and implementation of exceptional health care delivery systems for the hospital.• Develops and implements departmental goals, plans, and standards consistent with the clinical, administrative, legal, and all Joint Commission, and DPH Health Care Quality standards.• Works collaboratively, mentors and oversees the medical director, if the division has a medical director.• Implements systems and/or programs that address quality while supporting quality improvement projects that are consistent with Joint Commission standards.• Foster collaboration within the department and interdepartmentally.• Create and foster an environment that encourages the professional growth, development and success of faculty including utilizing mentoring, coaching and training.• Participate in education of students, residents, and fellows, including their development.• Participate in clinical, research and mentor other faculty in research pathways.• Plans and monitors staffing activities, including retaining, evaluating, engagement, recognition, disciplinary actions, hiring of diverse faculty and staff and continuing education initiatives.• Ensures that medical staff and other employees adhere to appropriate billing and coding procedures.• Participates as an active member in all appropriate Hospital administrative and clinical care committees as assigned.• Maintain fiscal responsibility and financial growth.• Maintain the requirements for an academic appointment at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine.Clinical Responsibilities• Assess, evaluate, diagnose and treat patients from birth through adulthood with benign and malignant medical and surgical ophthalmologic disorders.• Performs and/or orders clinically appropriate procedures for each patient.• Analyze medical histories, diagnostic lab test and x-ray results, clinical examinations and perform physical examinations in formulating a diagnosis, plan of care and documenting in conformity with applicable professional standards, third party payer requirements and the Division's policies and procedures.• Works collaboratively with and refers patients to other physicians, including other specialists and health care practitioners, when necessary.• Keeps and maintains accurate, complete, appropriate, timely and legible medical records relating to all professional services provided.• Uses and promotes evidence-based clinical practice.• Reviews on a regular basis long-term cases that require ongoing medical attention.• Assists in the resolution of complaints, requests and inquiries from patients.• Perform other duties as assigned.Supervisory ResponsibilitiesOversees the division including Physicians, Fellows, Residents, Medical Students and Advanced Practice Providers (APRNs & PAs).QualificationsEducation Required: Graduate from accredited school of medicine required MD, DO degreeExperience Required: Completed Board required training 5-7 years priorLeadership experience preferentially in an academic environmentOutstanding record of achievement in an academic medical center as a clinician, educator, investigator and academic medical administratorLicense and/or Certification RequiredBoard eligible or certified in OphthalmologyLicensed and registered, and in good standing under the laws of the State of ConnecticutActive and Unrestricted D.E.A.
