Assistant Director of Residential Life

: Minimum Qualifications:

• Master's degree plus at least two years of relevant experience, or a BA/BS degree plus at least six years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Master's degree in college student personnel, or closely related field
• At least one year of professional housing experience (Hall Director, Area Coordinator, etc.)
• Strong leadership and management skills with knowledge of housing operations on a college campus
• Previous experience supervising Residential Life student staff
• Ability to effectively manage student crises and conduct matters
• One year professional experience serving on-call and supporting student conduct
• Effective written and verbal communication
• Strong problem solving and critical thinking skills with the ability to work in and navigate ambiguity
• Commitment to the educational potential of residence life and demonstrated skills in the following areas: interpersonal communication, organizational planning, and administration of student development programming
• Demonstration of UMR values: human potential, diversity and inclusivity, community, evidence-based decision making, and respect.
• The desire and ability to work in a collaborative, team environment.

Assistant Director of Residential Life & Academic Initiatives Office of Student Life

This position works in-person at the University of Minnesota Rochester campus in Rochester, MN. This position is not eligible for H-1B or Green Card sponsorship.

Duties and Responsibilities Living Learning Community General Oversight: 20%

• Oversee the functions of Living Learning Communities (LLCs)
• Supervise the Living Learning Communities Coordinator
• Provide strategic direction and campus-wide leadership for the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of all LLCs
• Develop the goals and outcomes for each Living Learning Community and the year-long curriculum to meet the intended goals and outcomes
• Develop creative promotional opportunities to support strong engagement of participants
• Lead the assessment of LLCs and services using an evidence-based approach to student success with a focus on the sense of belonging
• Work collaboratively with the Director of Residential Life and the LLC Coordinator to assign first-year students to their LLCs
• In collaboration with the LLC Coordinator, provide oversight of the Community Mentor Program
• Assist in the promotion of Living Learning Communities during Admissions and Orientation events; effectively communicate goals/functions of LLCs to external stakeholders and communicate expectations and processes to first-year students
• Responsible for Living Learning Communities budgets and purchasing.

HealthCORE Coordination, Execution, and Development - 25%

• Manage the HealthCORE Living Learning Community (65+ students) with support from the Living Learning Communities Coordinator
• Update the HealthCORE covenant & agreement and ensure student compliance
• Plan themed/focused monthly HealthCORE meetings
• Plan semesterly HealthCORE retreats
• Coordinate volunteer opportunities for HealthCORE students
• Develop and assess a HealthCORE evaluation survey
• Develop a tracking system to document HealthCORE students
• Work collaboratively with Admissions on the selection/interview process for the HealthCORE scholarship and help organize HealthCORE Scholars Day

Student Success & Development - 20%

• Serve on the UMR Care Team
• Serve on the UMR Student Conduct Team and manage in-hall student conduct code violations
• Provide support and assistance to the Community Life Coordinator during student staff trainings and continuing education opportunities
• Participate in orientation and registration activities
• Community building - help foster welcoming, respectful and engaging residential spaces that promote sense of belonging and wellbeing
• Work collaboratively with the Director of Residential Life to establish, implement and assess student learning outcomes

Residential Life Operations - 20%

• Share responsibility in managing the Residential Life email account
• Utilize eRezLife to help manage operations
• Provide administrative support for all residence halls
• Use critical thinking and problem solving skills to address uncontrollable and unpredictable situations
• Serve on the rotational Professional Staff On-Call team - providing support during evenings/weekends as required which may include holidays/University breaks
• Work collaboratively with the Director of Residential Life to administer and evaluate a feedback form to enhance the Residential Life program and meet student needs
• Represent the perspective of Residential Life on the UMR Campus Safety Committee
• Assist with summer housing conferences

Leadership & Staff Supervision - 10%

• Directly supervise two full-time professional staff in Residential Life: the Living Learning Communities Coordinator and the Community Life Coordinator
• Participate in assessment plan development and implementation and develop goals and outcomes to best meet the needs of our students
• Facilitate 1:1 meetings with each professional staff member
• Complete staff reflections
• Establish strong teamwork and communication skills

Professional Development & Training (5%)

• Attend regularly scheduled Student Life team meetings
• Attend regularly scheduled professional development and diversity meetings
• Participate in the development and growth of the Student Life team through presenting workshops for staff and students
• Participate in special projects and committees as needed

Working Conditions Must perform the following essential functions with or without a reasonable accommodation:

• This is a full-time position which requires 40 hours per week.
• Living on campus is optional but must live within 30 minutes of campus
• Must work on-campus (in-person) 4-5 days per week
• Ability to work on-call with occasional evening and weekend responsibilities
• Ability to travel on and off campus

The Assistant Director of Residential Life & Academic Initiatives is a full-time, live-in optional position requiring 40 hours of work each week, which may include some evenings and weekends. The Assistant Director of Residential Life & Academic Initiatives will work closely with the Director of Residential Life to build residence halls that foster student well-being, build diverse and inclusive communities, support students' academic success, and advance UMR's Vision, Values, and Strategic Plan.The Assistant Director of Residential Life & Academic Initiatives will model UMR's values: diversity and inclusion, respect, community, human potential and evidence-based decision making.
