Automation Engineer, Allen-Bradley PLC Programming + Electrical Controls, Coffee Plant | 3593053

Overview Hands‑on controls work with real projects to own, rewrite, and commission the automated coffee transport system, upgrade roaster controls, and migrate operator screens to Ignition. This is a second shift, on‑site position in Totowa, NJ at a family‑owned coffee manufacturer investing heavily in automation and robotics. Responsibilities Act as the escalation point for the maintenance team on complex automation issues. Own the rewrite and commissioning of the automated coffee transport system. Lead controls and automation upgrades on the coffee roasters. Help migrate operator screens to Ignition Perspective and move the team to modular PLC programming. Support new robotics and end‑of‑line automation (robotic palletizer, vision inspection). Program and troubleshoot Allen‑Bradley PLCs in Studio 5000 Logix Designer for conveyors, VFDs, burner controllers, point‑level sensors, and operator interfaces. Design and build electrical control panels for capital projects. Read, trace, and redline electrical and safety schematics on the floor. Configure and commission VFDs (PowerFlex and similar) and machine‑safety circuits. Build and standardize HMI and SCADA screens in Ignition Perspective and FactoryTalk View. Integrate automation systems with the Plex ERP system. Qualifications 3 to 5+ years of hands‑on automation or controls engineering at a manufacturer, system integrator, or machine builder. Strong experience writing PLC code from scratch; Allen‑Bradley Studio 5000 strongly preferred. Real electrical depth: control panel design and build, reading and tracing schematics, and sizing conductors and overcurrent protection to the NEC. Hands‑on with VFDs and industrial controls in a production setting. Authorized to work in the US without sponsorship and able to commute to Totowa, NJ on second shift. Experience with Ignition Perspective. Machine‑safety experience (GuardMaster, GuardLogix, or Safe Torque Off). Panel design to UL 508A; AutoCAD Electrical or EPLAN proficiency. Bilingual in English and Spanish is a plus. A degree in engineering is welcome but not required; demonstrated skill and project work are key. Strong ability to write PLC code from scratch and integrate with the electrical side. Hands‑on problem‑solving and self‑driven initiative for end‑to‑end project ownership.
