Machinery Technician

To diagnose malfunctions in production machinery and equipment. Repair and maintain machinery and equipment in accordance with blueprints, schematic drawings, operations manuals, and manufacturer's specifications. May set up and operate metal working machinery and tools, such as lathes, drill presses, and grinders to make and repair parts. Performs preventive maintenance on all the plastic extrusion lines and related equipment.

Essential Functions:

• Disassemble machinery and equipment to remove parts and make repairs.
• Examine parts for defects such as breakage and excessive wear.
• Repair and replace broken or malfunctioning components of machinery and equipment.
• Clean, lubricate, adjust parts, equipment, and machinery.
• Repairs, replaces, adjusts, and aligns components of machinery and equipment.
• Test-runs repaired machinery and equipment to verify adequacy of repairs.
• Fabricates replacement parts.
• Welds to repair broken metal parts, fabricate new parts, and assemble new equipment.
• Orders or requisitions parts and materials.
• Repairs and replaces electrical wiring and components of machinery.
• Enter codes and instructions to program computer-controlled machinery.
• Records repairs and maintenance performed.
• Required to be on a rotating call out schedule.
• Keeps maintenance department clear and organized by replacing used tools and equipment.
• Confers with operators and observes, tests, and evaluates operation of machinery and equipment to diagnose cause of malfunction.
• Repairing machines or systems using the needed tool.
• Determining causes of operating errors and deciding what to do about it.
• Performing routine maintenance on equipment and determining when and what kind of maintenance is needed.
• Selecting and determining the kind of tools and equipment needed to do a job.
• Installing new or used equipment, machines, wiring, or programs to meet specifications.
• Being able to use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.

PPE Requirements and Safety Rules:

• Eye protection is required everywhere in the plant.
• Hearing protection is required everywhere in the plant.
• Safety toed shoes or boots are required everywhere in the plant.
• Cut gloves are required to be worn on the opposite hand you use to hold a knife when cutting.
• Maximum weight allowed to be lifted by one person is 80 pounds. Anything heavier requires the aid from another person, forklift, big joe, or roll handlers.
• Face shields are required to be worn anytime you are over the die during start-up.
• Each machine is equipped with multiple safety switches and devices. Although the features are not the same for each machine, they all have safety devices in place to help protect you. These include pressure sensitive mats, light curtains, pull cords, and emergency stop buttons.

• Manual Dexterity- The ability to quickly move your hand, your hand together with your arm or your two hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects.
• Control Precision- The ability to quickly and repeatedly adjust the controls of a machine or a vehicle to exact positions.
• Finger Dexterity- The ability to make precisely coordinated movements of the fingers of one or both hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble very small objects.
• Arm-Hand Steadiness- The ability to keep your hand and arm steady while moving your arm or while holding your arm and hand in one position.
• Near Vision- The ability to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer).

Supervisory Responsibility: This position has no supervisory responsibility.

Work Environment: This position operates in a plant/warehouse environment. This position is occasionally exposed to a variety of extreme conditions. The noise level in the work environment may be loud.

Physical Demands: Lifts 50 to 80 pounds at various times, depending on the job at hand. Reaches overhead about 10% of the day. Squats, kneels, bends, walks, and stands about 80% of the day and sits about 20%. Sitting while working on the computer with parts listing, entering records, and other maintenance work.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work: This is a full-time position. The staffing for this position is separated into two different categories. General hours of work for the day shift employees are 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Additional employees are assigned to each production shift and work monthly, rotating schedules with hours consisting of 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., three and four days per week, respectively.
