SENIOR ASSOCIATE ATTORNEY — IMMIGRATION LAW

Our work spans a broad range of immigration matters, with deep expertise in family-based immigration, humanitarian relief, T and U Visas, VAWA, removal defense, and USCIS/NVC cases. We are seeking an experienced immigration attorney who is ready to take ownership of a complex caseload, mentor junior staff, and help shape case strategy and firm-wide practice. Who You Are You are a seasoned immigration attorney with a track record in humanitarian relief work who cares deeply about people. You have handled complex, high-stakes matters independently and know how to guide clients through some of the most important and stressful moments of their lives with clarity and compassion. You are comfortable managing a high caseload, mentoring junior attorneys and paralegals, communicating directly with clients, and balancing legal strategy with a collaborative team. You are detail-oriented, proactive, and take ownership of your work while still appreciating a team that has your back. Position Summary As a Senior Associate Attorney, you bring substantial experience across non-immigrant and immigrant visa categories, demonstrate strong legal judgment, and are dedicated to achieving positive outcomes for clients. You treat clients and colleagues with compassion and respect and take pride in your work. Significant background in humanitarian relief (T/U Visa, VAWA, asylum, or removal defense) and USCIS/NVC cases is required. You will independently manage a complex caseload, provide legal advice, draft, review, and file petitions, applications, and case packets, represent clients in immigration court and at USCIS interviews, and establish, communicate, and execute case strategy. You will also play a leadership role in supervising paralegal and junior attorney casework, contributing to firm-wide legal strategy, and supporting the firm’s ongoing policy and compliance work. Key Responsibilities Independently manage a complex caseload including family-based petitions, T Visas, U Visas, VAWA, adjustment of status, asylum, and removal defense, including higher-complexity and higher-risk matters Conduct client consultations, assess eligibility, develop legal strategy, and educate clients on strategy and any changes Prepare and file petitions, applications, and motions with USCIS, immigration courts, and consulates; review all filings for accuracy prior to submission Represent clients in USCIS interviews, EOIR proceedings, and merits hearings; prepare and deliver direct and cross examination Supervise, mentor, and provide case-strategy guidance to associate attorneys, paralegals, and legal support staff; review and sign off on their casework Serve as a point of escalation for complex or sensitive case issues and help train staff on emerging humanitarian relief strategies Communicate with DHS officials, court officers and judges, law enforcement, and expert witnesses Prepare clients for interviews and court appearances Frequently assist clients from diverse cultures whose primary language is not English Contribute subject-matter expertise to the firm’s weekly immigration policy monitoring and briefing process, flagging case-relevant regulatory and case-law developments Demonstrate agility, creativity, and problem-solving in addressing urgent situations and developing effective legal strategies Maintain accurate case files and meet all deadlines in a high-volume environment Conduct legal research and stay current on developments in immigration law and policy Qualifications Required: Active member in good standing of the bar in any U.S. state or jurisdiction 4–7+ years of substantial immigration law experience performed on a routine daily basis Demonstrated independent experience with humanitarian immigration — T Visa, U Visa, VAWA, asylum, or removal defense, including representing clients through final adjudication or hearing Strong working knowledge of federal and state court systems, legal research procedures, and legal research resources Experience in a high-volume immigration legal office environment Experience supervising, delegating to, or mentoring junior attorneys or paralegals Excellent verbal and written communication skills Fluent / Professional Spanish required for direct client work Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills Ability to take initiative and function effectively in a fast-paced environment Preferred Background in USCIS and NVC cases strongly preferred Experience with survivor populations (labor trafficking, domestic violence) Prior experience training, supervising, or building workflows for legal support staff Familiarity with community-based legal service models What We Offer Barrales Law is proud to offer a competitive compensation and benefits package that reflects our commitment to the well-being of our team: Salary of $100,000–$125,000/year, commensurate with experience Paid Time Off (PTO): Vacation and sick leave to help you maintain a healthy work-life balance Health insurance 401(k) retirement plan with employer contribution Monthly transportation or WiFi stipend Monthly phone stipend Parental leave Friendly, collaborative, and mission-driven work environment Why Barrales Law Meaningful, mission-driven work helping immigrants navigate a complex legal system Supportive team culture that values both high-quality legal work and personal well-being Clear workflows and systems designed to help attorneys succeed Leadership opportunity to shape case strategy and mentor a growing legal team Direct impact on the lives of clients from diverse backgrounds How to Apply Please submit the following to View email address on click.appcast.io with the subject line "Senior Associate Attorney Application": Cover letter describing your interest, humanitarian immigration experience, and any supervisory/mentoring experience Resume / CV Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis.
