The DHH teacher provides specialized instruction, consultation, and support services to students, staff, and families to ensure students have meaningful access to educational opportunities across school environments. Essential Functions This class specification lists the major duties and requirements of the job and is not all-inclusive. Incumbent(s) may be expected to perform job-related duties other than those contained in this document and may be required to have specific job-related knowledge and skills. Provides direct and indirect specialized instruction and support services to students who are deaf or hard of hearing across educational environments, consistent with students' IEPs, communication needs, and access requirements. Assess and supports student development in areas including language, communication, self-advocacy, auditory skill development, social-emotional functioning, and academic achievement. Collaborates with general education teachers, special education staff, related service providers, interpreters, paraprofessionals, and administrators to support student access to instruction, classroom participation, and implementation of accommodations and modifications. Supports the implementation and effective use of hearing assistive technology and communication access supports, including FM/DM systems, captioning, interpreters, visual supports, and other accommodations as appropriate. Monitors student progress toward IEP goals; collects and analyzes data; and adjusts instructional strategies and supports based on student needs and response to intervention. Serves as case manager for assigned students when appropriate and develops and maintains IEPs, evaluation reports, progress reports, and documentation in compliance with federal and state special education law and district procedures. Facilitates collaborative communication with families regarding student progress, communication development, educational access, transition planning, and support needs. Provides consultation, coaching, and training to district staff regarding hearing loss, communication access, accommodations, assistive technology, and inclusive practices for students who are deaf or hard of hearing. Participates in evaluation planning, Child Study Teams, IEP meetings, transition planning, professional learning communities, and district initiatives. Makes sure confidentiality of student information and demonstrates professionalism in conduct, communication, and collaboration. Performs other duties as assigned consistent with the teachers' collective bargaining agreement. Qualifications To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Education and Experience Bachelor's degree in Deaf Education, Special Education, or a related field required Experience providing direct instruction, consultation, and collaborative support services to students who are deaf or hard of hearing in school-based settings preferred. Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, families, and general education staff to support student access and educational programming preferred. Required Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations Valid Minnesota teaching license in Deaf/Hard of Hearing (DHH) issued by the Professional Educator Licensing and Standards Board (PELSB). Required Knowledge Knowledge of deafness and hearing loss across educational settings, including language development, communication modalities, auditory access, assistive technology, and the impact of hearing loss on academic and social-emotional development. Knowledge of IDEA, Minnesota special education rules, accessibility requirements, IEP development, and evidence-based instructional and inclusive practices for students who are deaf or hard of hearing. Required Skills Strong collaboration, consultation, and communication skills with students, families, interpreters, related service providers, general education staff, and multidisciplinary teams. Skill in providing individualized instruction, implementing accommodations and assistive technology supports, monitoring student progress, maintaining compliant documentation, and supporting student self-advocacy and independence. Physical/Mental Requirements Mobility and stamina to work in and travel between a variety of classroom and school settings; ability to stand, walk, bend, sit on the floor, and move for extended periods of time; strength and dexterity to lift, carry, and troubleshoot specialized student tech and itinerant instructional materials weighing up to 20 pounds; visual ability to closely monitor student safety, read facial expressions, and perceive visual communication; and the mental alertness and adaptability to manage diverse communication modalities, maintain IEP compliance, and respond calmly to changing student needs. Frequent travel within the district is required; employee must have access to reliable transportation. Working Environment Work is performed in multiple K-12 school buildings across the district, primarily within classroom environments, administrative offices, and meeting spaces.
