Position Overview Position Title: Croatan Vegetation Management Assistant Crew Leader – AmeriCorps Conservation Legacy Program: Conservation Corps North Carolina (CCNC) Site Location: Based out of Bahama, North Carolina – service projects in the Croatan National Forest. Employment Details Start Date: 8/31/2026 End Date: 11/18/2026 AmeriCorps Slot Classification: 300 Hours Purpose Federal partnership with the U.S. Forest Service to complete projects that support ecosystem restoration and invasive vegetation control in the Croatan National Forest. This seasonally‑based position includes native tree/shrub planting, site preparation, seedling protection, and transition to vegetation management using hand and power tools. Responsibilities Lead and manage crew operations, ensuring safety, task completion, and effective communication with project partners. Operate chainsaws as required and train crew members in safe use; crew members will not be chainsaw‑trained. Coordinate crew assignments, logistics, and project materials while maintaining project schedules. Act as a liaison between the crew leader and staff, facilitating open dialogue and constructive feedback. Maintain a positive crew experience and model enthusiasm, good judgment, and safety practices. Assist in food planning, camp chores, and group discussions; ensure compliance with safety and hygiene protocols. Participate in ongoing trainings, including chainsaw safety and related field techniques. Qualifications U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or lawful permanent resident. Minimum age 17 years. High‑school diploma or equivalent, or willing to obtain a diploma prior to completion of the education award. Current Wilderness First Aid (WFA) or CPR/First Aid certification, or high‑level medical certifications (WAFA, WFR, EMT); certification must be valid for the entire season. Clean driving record; driver’s license. Physical ability to work long days in adverse conditions and operate chainsaws. Strong communication skills; ability to work in a team and adapt to changing schedules. Fluent in English; ability to speak, understand, and write. Minimum age 21 years for driving responsibilities. Preferred Qualifications Previous AmeriCorps or crew experience. Chainsaw operation experience. Camping/backpacking experience. Demonstrated adaptability, professionalism, and community‑building ethic. Time Requirements Typical schedule: 9 days on and 5 days off, with 10‑hour workdays and scheduled breaks. Service may extend to additional national, state, or local projects as needed. Orientation and Training Orientation on AmeriCorps mission and prohibited activities. Training in U.S. Forest Service chainsaw techniques (Developing Thinking Sawyers). 2 days of chainsaw presentations. 5 days of chainsaw cut training to prepare for B‑feller or A‑feller certification. Benefits Segal AmeriCorps Education Award of $1,568.08. Living allowance of $480 per week. Additional allowance of $170 per week. Childcare coverage, loan forbearance, and interest payments for eligible participants. Evaluation and Reporting Performance will be evaluated based on hours completed, assignment completion, and other criteria communicated at the start of the term. Reporting includes bi‑weekly timesheets and accomplishment tracking.
