Position Title Assistant Crew Leader (Piedmont Office)-AmeriCorps Program Conservation Legacy Program: Conservation Corps North Carolina Location Based out of Bahama, North Carolina with service projects throughout the region Terms of Service Start Date: 05/26/2026 End Date: 08/19/2026 AmeriCorps Slot Classification: 300 Hours Purpose The mission of Conservation Corps North Carolina (CCNC) as an AmeriCorps program is to empower young adults through meaningful outdoor work that benefits North Carolina’s land and water and creates healthy communities. CCNC partners with public land managers to engage motivated young adults (ages 18–30) in conservation service projects, including trail construction & maintenance, habitat improvement, hazard fuel reduction, ecological restoration, and disaster relief. Description of Duties Assistant Crew Leaders (ACLs) facilitate a positive Crew Member experience and partner with the Staff Crew Leader to communicate goals, project specifications and provide constructive feedback. They assist with project management, partner communication, logistics, and crew assignments. ACLs lead by example in hard work and safety, foster learning, and adapt to changing schedules and weather. This seasonal position requires full commitment to the crew’s schedule and project needs. Project Work Reopening and repairing storm‑impacted trail corridors Trail construction and maintenance (tread, drainage, steps, retaining walls, erosion control) Clearing hazard trees, blowdowns, and debris Hazard fuel reduction and vegetation management (chainsaws, brush cutters, hand tools) Removal of invasive, non‑native plant species; support botany projects Timber stand improvement and ecological restoration techniques Rough carpentry (bridge and boardwalk repair or installation) Expectations Crews are independent and non‑residential. Crew Members must secure housing, food, and transportation when not in the field, provide most personal outdoor gear, and accept group tools and transportation from CCNC. Members are expected to work hard, stay positive, be flexible, and commit fully to the experience and timeline. Participation and Behavior Work effectively as a team member; problem‑solve in difficult conditions Contribute to a safe learning environment; no harassment of anyone Drive CCNC crew vehicles & trailers with proper skill Commit to all crew and team activities, including service days in local communities Communicate concerns directly to supervisors and staff Learn and apply necessary skills safely and correctly Represent the Program and AmeriCorps professionally to the public and partners Safety and Judgment Communicate danger or distress at distance up to 50 meters in challenging conditions Understand and follow instructions to manage hazards before or during exposure Maintain alertness and focus while traveling and working under varied weather Respond appropriately to stress or crises Manage prescription medication dosage independently if needed Outdoor Skills and Fitness Perform fundamental outdoor living and work skills, maintain hydration and proper dress Live in physically demanding environments up to several weeks, possibly remote with limited medical care Qualifications United States citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident alien At least 18 years old High school diploma or equivalent; if not yet completed, must obtain before using the education award Agree to provide eligibility information and complete a National Service Criminal History Check For chainsaw positions, hold a current Wilderness First Aid (WFA) or CPR/First Aid certification at least two weeks prior to start No previous experience required, but comfort and knowledge of outdoor living beneficial Preferred Qualifications Previous corps or crew experience Chainsaw experience Experience with camping/backpacking Adaptability Professionalism Community‑building ethic Commitment CCNC supports reasonable accommodations for individuals with disabilities. Physical requirements include occasional overnight travel, non‑traditional hours, movement across varied terrain, use of program tools and technology, load lifting up to 25 pounds, and driving organizational vehicles where needed. Time Requirements Typically serve from Tuesday to following Wednesday; lunch breaks not counted toward service May participate in national, state, or local service projects or events as part of the term Position is seasonal; crew members are asked to fully commit to the experience, expectations, and timeline Orientation and Training Orientation on AmeriCorps prohibited and unallowable activities On‑the‑job training and US Forest Service Chainsaw Certification for applicable crew types Benefits Segal AmeriCorps Education Award of $1,565.08 Living Allowance of $480 per week Additional benefit of $170 per week Member Assistance Program – 3 free counseling or work‑life balance sessions Uniforms and safety equipment (helmets, gloves, eye protection) provided Assistance may be available for borrowing personal outdoor gear Positions may fulfill internship requirements depending on academic institution Professional development opportunities (mentorship, resume support, alumni listserv) Exposure to natural resource career paths and opportunities Evaluation and Reporting Performance is evaluated based on hours completed, satisfactory assignment completion, and meeting other criteria communicated at the start.
