Position Title Piedmont Vegetation Management Crew Member - AmeriCorps Conservation Legacy Program Conservation Corps North Carolina (CCNC) Site Location Based out of Bahama, North Carolina – service projects throughout Durham and Wake Counties in the Piedmont Region Terms of Service Start Date: 09/15/2026 End Date: 11/18/2026 AmeriCorps Slot Classification: 300 Hours Purpose This AmeriCorps position will directly support municipal parks in Durham and Wake counties. Projects focus on removing invasive plant species, reducing hazardous fuels, and improving ecosystem health. Work will include chainsaw operations, brush cutting, and other mechanical and chemical treatment methods. The work will be arduous and fast‑paced in areas of high exposure. Position Summary Crews are typically composed of 1 Staff Crew Leader, 1 AmeriCorps Assistant Crew Leader, and 4 AmeriCorps Members. Members gain experience in vegetation management, chainsaw operations, and ecological restoration, while living and working outdoors in a team‑based, immersive setting. Schedule and Work Conditions Variable “hitch” schedule, generally 9 days on and 5 days off for camping crews. Workdays follow a 10‑hour shift with scheduled breaks. Food is provided while in the field; crews plan meals and complete evening chores. Personal flexibility is expected due to changing schedules, weather, and project needs. Project Work Hazard fuel reduction and vegetation management using chainsaws, brush cutters, hand saws, loppers, and other tools. Removal of invasive, non‑native plant species. Timber stand improvement and other ecological restoration techniques. Debris removal and corridor clearing in storm‑impacted areas. Expectations Non‑residential; crew members responsible for own housing, food, and transportation when not in the field unless otherwise specified. Group equipment and protective gear provided, but crew members should supply personal outdoor gear. Participation and Expedition Behavior Work effectively as part of a team under stressful conditions. Contribute to a safe learning environment; no harassment of others. Commit to all program activities and service days. Communicate issues directly to supervisors, colleagues, and staff. Apply learned skills effectively. Represent AmeriCorps positively. Safety and Judgment Communicate danger or distress within 50 meters and in low visibility conditions. Follow directions to manage hazards effectively. Maintain alertness during long work periods. Perceive and respond to hazards. Manage stress or crises appropriately. Maintain prescription medication dosage if applicable. Outdoor Skills and Fitness Perform essential outdoor living and work skills safely. Live in physically demanding, possibly remote environments for up to several weeks. Resources within 1‑12 hours of advanced medical care. Qualifications Willingness to commit fully to the program and its mission. Ability to manage all aspects of crew life and production within a 40‑50 hour work week. Flexibility, adaptability, and capacity to work in a fluid environment. Willingness to learn and be part of a dynamic community of peer leaders. Physically fit to work long days in adverse conditions. Must speak, understand, and write English. High School diploma or GED certificate. At least 17 years of age. Must pass Conservation Legacy’s criminal history check requirements. No previous experience required; comfort with outdoor settings helpful. Orientation and Training Orientation includes training on AmeriCorps prohibited and unallowable activities. Benefits Segal AmeriCorps Education Award: $1,568.08 Living Allowance: $480 per week. Evaluation and Reporting Performance evaluated on hours completed, assignment fulfillment, and meeting performance criteria communicated at term start. Reporting includes bi‑weekly timesheets and accomplishment tracking.
