Geologist Senior

Job SummaryThis position is responsible for geological mapping, resource evaluation, drill program management, and subsurface modeling across surface mining operations in the East and South Divisions generally, and Florida, Georgia and South Carolina specifically. Primary responsibilities also include interpreting geological data, estimating aggregate reserves, providing technical analysis, advice, and geological support to mining operations, Division Management, and Geological Services staff.Essential Functions• Proficient in the use of AutoCAD, Carlson Geology Software, HxGN Geology CAD, ArcGIS/QGIS, RockWorks or other Spreadsheet/Database software packages.Plan, manage, and execute exploratory and developmental drilling programs, core logging, and rock sample collection.Gather and utilize geological mapping, drill data, hydrologic information, quality testing results, topography, aerial photography, survey data, sales forecasts, and other geologic data to design 3-D geological and block models.Gather, review, analyze, and document property lines, mining setbacks, easements, zoning, special use agreements, neighbor concerns, and other site-specific land use information as necessary for the geological evaluation process.Calculate, categorize, and document aggregate reserve and resource estimates in compliance with company and industry standards.Interpret structural, stratigraphical, and lithological features to evaluate material quality, overburden thickness, and slope stability risk.Support short-term and long-term mine plans by identifying geological hazards, rock quality variations, structural discontinuities, and groundwater conditions.Assist operations personnel in interpreting deposit quality, optimizing pit faces, complying with permit conditions, laws, regulations, and guidelines, and in maintaining the systems necessary for compliance.Identify opportunities to optimize resource recovery, minimize waste rock, reduce operating costs, and reduce impacts to neighbors.Assist in preparation of presentations, documentations, reports, cross-sections, and geological maps as needed.Maintain aerial photos, topographic maps, drill logs, and geological spatial databases on the network server in an up-to-date and current status.As directed, may interact with outside consultants and testing laboratories for geological projects.Participate in zoning efforts, special projects, and property acquisitions as necessary.Critical Competencies• Customer Service - Understands, anticipates, and meets customer needs while ensuring a positive experience and building long-term relationships.• Attention to Detail - Ability to thoroughly and accurately complete tasks; meticulous and precise when handling information, and is critical in ensuring the quality, accuracy, and integrity of the results. • Analytical Thinking - Ability to break down complex problems, situations, in order to understand underlying patterns, identify key issues; examine information logically, question assumptions, and draw conclusions based on evidence. • Communication - Communicates clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing, while actively listening and adapting the message to the audience.• Decision Making - Makes informed, effective, and timely decisions by evaluating available information, considering potential outcomes, and choosing the best course of action; analyzes options, weighs risks and benefits, and uses sound judgment to reach decisions that align with organizational goals and values. • Product Knowledge - Understands and can explain succinctly VMC products and/or services including their composition, features, benefits, and limitations.Education• BS or MS in GeologyExperience• 5+ years experience, construction aggregate industry preferred • PG preferredKnowledge, Skills, and Abilities• Must have the ability, either through formal training or experience, to create geological models, compute stone reserves, and interpret data including geologic testing results, geophysical logs, topographic maps, and regulatory requirements. Basic surveying and GIS knowledge preferred. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills are necessary. Must have knowledge of basic geological concepts, structural geology, stratigraphy, mineralogy, as well as of the federal, state, and local regulations and statutes which affect mining operations. Proficient skills in 3D modeling, CAD design, Excel, and other computer related software are required.Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are mandatory. Must be able to present complex geological information in a clear and concise manner. The position requires ability to successfully interact and build relationships with VMC personnel from a wide range of departments and levels of authority, as well as with representatives of government and regulatory agencies.Behavioral Expectations: Employees are expected to be self-motivated and to manage multiple projects effectively without close supervision. Strong positive customer service attitude toward internal and external customers is expected.Other Requirements• Up to 50% travel time, sometimes requiring overnight stay.• Work environment will be both indoors in an office and outside in a quarry or vacant land. The employee will be required to sit working at a desktop computer for several hours a day while in the office. The employee will be required to walk and carry computer field equipment or survey equipment when working outside.
