Job Summary and Qualifications The Nurse Manager serves as a role model, clinically and administratively, clinical consultant for Nursing and ancillary staff. The Nurse Manager is responsible for clinical and administrative decisions in the division in collaboration with or in the absence of the Director. Manages personnel to accomplish designated goals and provide nursing care and services. Manages adequate and competent staffing and the daily schedule to ensure quality patient care and stakeholder needs. Evaluates effectiveness of care and addresses issues affecting patient outcomes. Ensures age- and culturally-appropriate care is given. Follows Standard Precautions with PPE as required. Assists staff in reaching potential as an effective team through innovative practices. Communicates effectively, written and verbally, with all health‑care team members, customers and stakeholders. Maintains departmental activities within budget; suggests implements cost‑reduction activities. Ensures department compliance with hospital, HCA policies, procedures and regulatory requirements. Demonstrates clinical competence in the unit nurse role. Assumes responsibility for own growth: professional organization participation, seminars, formal educational activities. Participates in hospital and community activities to promote nurse role and recruit/retain staff. Collaborates with colleagues on practice issues. Participates in Management Development curriculum. Develops department orientation and competency activities. Develops preceptors. Reviews, edits & approves staff payroll. Participates in annual competency and evaluation processes. Participates in purposeful patient and employee rounding. Assumes shared responsibility for department audits and daily plus stats. Ensures staff are active participants in unit and hospital-wide committees. Monitors orientee performance, initiates action to correct/develop orientees. Provides staff honest constructive feedback on performance and growth. Provides mentoring, counseling, coaching. Provides opportunities for staff to participate in shared governance. Assists staff in patient care and services as needed. Other duties as assigned. Education & Experience One year of recent Medical/Surgical experience preferred. BSN required. Master’s degree in a related field or actively pursuing an advanced degree preferred. Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia or a compact state license. BLS required.
