St. Bernard Hospital is searching for a Surgical (Surgery) RN with caring hands and a healing heart. We need a Surgical (Surgery) RN who can maintain a sterile environment, assist the surgical team, monitor the patient’s vital signs, and directly assist in surgical procedures. The Surgical (Surgery) RN must promote safety, comfort, and well-being before, during, and after surgery. Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Nursing or related field.
• Minimum of two (2) years of experience in operating room. (Required)
• Pre-Operative/Pre-Admission Testing Experience (Preferred)
• Recovery Room Experience (Preferred)

Responsibilities:

Specialty:

• Complete Pre-Operative record during the pre-operative phase.
• Routinely assist with surgical procedures in scrub and circulating duties and supervise non-professional staff.
• Ensure supplies and equipment are in the room and provide additional supplies and equipment to staff as needed.
• Open sterile packs and supplies according to aseptic techniques and assist in preparation as needed.
• Assist surgeons, anesthetists, and other staff as needed to assure good patient care.
• Routinely prepare operative area as directed by standards.
• Always accompany patients to recovery room.
• Receive and give reports concerning the patient as necessary to assure good patient care.
• Assess patient for pain pre and post operation procedure.
• Follow the time-out rule to ensure correct patient is being taken and surgical site is being used.
• Ensure three (3) surgical counts are completed and follow policy should an incorrect count occur.

Specialty – Recovery Room:

• Assess each patient on admission to PARR and identify airway patency.
• Ausculates lung sounds and note respirations.
• Monitor pulse ox, observe skin, lips, nail beds, and extremities.
• Monitor the oxygen delivery system.
• Competently take all peripheral pulses.
• Monitor cardiac rhythms and recognize significant arrhythmias.
• Monitor CVP lines and arterial lines.
• Monitor and document urinary output and check for bladder distention.
• Maintain IVs at the prescribed rate of flow and label IVs and additives.
• Observe dressings for excessive bleeding/drainage and document assessments.
• Check all tubes, drains, etc. for patency and discharge.
• Assess level of consciousness competently.
• Assess for post-op pain and document nursing interventions and patient’s response.
• Initiate physician’s orders promptly.
• Notify the Unit when equipment and special preparations are required and provide a complete telephone report to the Unit Nurse prior to the transfer of the patient.
• Participate in pre and post operative teaching.
• 1Maintain PARR Log accurately and compile data for monthly statistics.
