Certified Maintenance - Mechanic

This position performs work in the maintenance and repair of district equipment that require specialized training and experience to insure that interruptions of district operations are kept to a minimum. Perform related work as required to maintain district equipment in a safe, effective condition and assures that overall maintenance needs are met.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Inspect, diagnose and repair mechanical defects/failures in various maintenance equipment, such as fuel, electrical, transmission, steering, braking and hydraulic systems
• Maintain all equipment to insure proper operation and safety.
• Keeps a complete set of records for equipment and parts inventory purchases, equipment conditions, costs of repairs and preventative maintenance for all equipment.
• Trains and evaluates staff on equipment operations, preventative maintenance procedures, and new equipment orientations.
• Communicate with the staff to ensure all the equipment is safe to use and available for daily and weekly tasks.
• Maintain fuel, oil and equipment and parts inventories.
• Maintain a safe, clean and organized shop and work environment at all times.
• Provide functional supervision to insure operation and maintenance equipment is used according to standard operation procedure.
• Maintains a preventative maintenance program within budget on all equipment and purchases repair parts and replacement supplies.
• Build a positive working relationship with school administrators, custodians and other employees of the district.
• Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with Supervisor and/or other on-site personnel.
• Work independently during the normal workday and during off hours on an on-call status as needed.
• Comply with OSHA regulations/guidelines regarding materials and safety, as established by OSHA guidelines.
• Participate as directed in any training and development programs identified by the Supervisor; keep current on relevant information and technology.

Supervisory Responsibilities: Indirect/functional supervision to outside contractors and project responsibility to other operation and maintenance employees.

Minimum Education or Experience:

• 4-5 years of automotive or diesel experience preferred
• High school diploma or equivalent required
• Must be able to perform at a journeyman level in his/her field.
• ASE certified Auto Technician/experience level required.
• Class B CDL license preferred or be able to obtain.

Physical Demands:

• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands and fingers to handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and talk or hear.
• The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms in handling, installing, positioning, and moving materials and manipulating things.
• The employee is occasionally required to sit.
• The employee frequently must perform physical activities that require squatting, stooping or kneeling, climbing, lifting, balancing, and reaching above the head and forward.
• The employee continuously uses hand strength to grasp tools, may be done while climbing on a ladder.
• The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and waist more than the average person while performing the duties of this job.
• The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Occasionally, the employee will lift and/or move up to 90 lbs. with assistance.
• The employee will sometimes push/pull items.
• Specific vision abilities required for this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
• The employee must be able to transport supplies and equipment from one location to another.

Work Environment:

• While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works indoors and will occasionally work outdoors.
• Work may be performed during inclement weather, with exposure to extreme temperatures and conditions including snow and ice.
• The employee will work near or with moving mechanical equipment.
• The employee may occasionally work with toxic or caustic chemicals such as petroleum products, degreasers, and sprays.
• The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints.
• The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
• By District Board policy, the district facilities and grounds are to be drug, alcohol and tobacco free zones.
