DIGITAL MEDIA SPECIALIST

Currently, we have one opening for a 3.75-hour, 10-month employee at CJ. Morris Elementary School. The work hours are 8:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., Monday through Friday. The eligibility list will be used to fill current and future permanent openings and will be certified for six months. BASIC FUNCTION Under general supervision of the principal or designee, responsible for processing digital and hard copy materials ordered and cataloged for school libraries and media centers. Maintain library records and inventory of electronic, printed, audiovisual, and multimedia materials and support and assist in computer operations and related electronic systems in school libraries. Responsible for basic maintenance and storage of technological equipment, textbooks, and workbooks. Order, receive, and catalog new materials and assist with proper distribution of obsolete materials and equipment. Oversee school site's internal web page and digital media resources and perform other job-related duties as assigned by principal or designated supervisor. Examples of Duties Essential Job Functions Coordinate workflow while maintaining the school library/media center and multi-media collection Participate in the receipt of a wide variety of media for the school library, including electronic, printed, digital, and media systems (CD, DVD, DVR, multimedia, computer carts, and LCD projectors) Verify and maintain acquisitions, cataloging information, and distribution records, including processing records into the library database Assist in the physical processing of library materials Implement a system of distribution of processed items to the library and classrooms as listed above Oversee and assist school library inventory and textbook in/out processing Train and orient personnel in technical library processing Assist with operation of automated circulation and online catalog systems in all school library/media centers Demonstrate and train users in current electronic ordering system and internal school web page Coordinate related data and data storage with Technology and Data Processing departments Maintain library master inventory, including multimedia physical resources Order supplies May install software upgrades for library and multimedia curriculum Correlate technology and student information system with library and multimedia curriculum Provide information on media and equipment to library and school site staff, including title and/or product searches, ordering information, and technology-related data Maintain financial/accounting records from purchases and book replacement fees Assist with discarding obsolete materials and textbooks, including personal computers, library books, and projectors Receive, unbox, organize, and distribute student materials at start of school year May take lead role in school-wide book fair May establish schedule of volunteer workers, including parents and students May organize library lesson plans, activities, and read-alouds Check-in/out books to students and staff, including shelving and reshelving books Monitor and send communications regarding overdue materials, including collecting, recording, and processing fines for lost or damaged materials Research books for book orders determined by budget, need, requests, interest, and inclusivity for a diverse library collection Participate in professional development opportunities offered by the department, school site, and District that are held during employee’s work hours and work year May participate in professional development opportunities outside employee’s work hours and work year Attend meetings related to the assignment Perform related duties as assigned JOB REQUIREMENTS – QUALIFICATIONS Skill To Operate a variety of personal computers and related library equipment and technology, multimedia equipment, and hardware Understand and carry out oral and written directives with minimal supervision Make mathematical calculations with speed and accuracy Use different classification systems, relational database systems and related tools, and appropriate library software Maintain appropriate records and prepare complete and concise reports Operate basic computers, program software, and electronic devices Knowledge Of Library terminology and standard practices, including familiarity with the use of library cataloging systems and cataloging tools Technology and computer software applications relative to multi-media processing, circulation, cataloging, record keeping, and other office functions Clerical techniques and procedures in record keeping, inventory, and related courseware Methods and practices of purchasing and receiving inventory English usage, spelling, grammar, punctuation, and letter and report writing Equity, access, and inclusion practices as it relates to all program participants Ability To Process a wide variety of school library and multimedia materials Stop, pick up, and resume tasks Assist staff and others in the operation of library-related technology systems Use initiative and judgment in solving problems Plan, organize and coordinate the work of other employees and/or students Read, understand, and follow laws, rules, regulations, processes, policies, and methods of the office, the District, and the State of California Learn and use technology and computer software applications as appropriate to the work environment Maintain accurate and neat records and reports Learn, plan, formulate, and execute federal, state, District, and departmental policies, procedures and directives in accordance with assigned duties Use an alpha/numeric keyboard and standard office equipment, including devices and related courseware such as computers, printers, CD towers, LUD projectors, lap-top carts, SMART T.V.’s, etc., effectively with a reasonable rate of speed and accuracy Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with students, staff, parents, and community members Communicate effectively in the English language, both orally and in writing Perform under demanding and varied work schedules with ability to remain flexible and focused during interruptions and distractions Skillfully handle difficult situations using good judgment Promote team building and a positive work environment Adapt easily to work assignments, additional priorities, and new procedures Receive constructive criticism and modify work appropriately Demonstrate cultural competence and responsiveness in interactions and decision making Efficiently use and manage time; meet communicated deadlines Typical Qualifications EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENT Experience Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and skills may be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and skills would be: One (1) year of experience working with children in a library, licensed school-age program, or other educational setting. In addition, one (1) year of experience in a clerical capacity to include experience working with computer applications and related multimedia technology, is required. Education Completion of an Associate of Arts Degree or its equivalent. PHYSICAL DEMANDS Persons performing service in this position classification will be expected to perform medium work, which involves lifting no more than 50 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds. If someone can do medium work, we determine that he or she can also do sedentary and light work. (Per the Code of Federal Regulations – Section 404.1567 “Physical Exertion Requirements”) Requirements This type of work requires the ability to bend at waist, kneel, or crouch to assist students, stamina to sit, stand, and walk for long periods of time Ability to enter and exit an automobile This classification may experience indoor and some outdoor work environments Sufficient arm, hand, finger dexterity to use a personal computer keyboard, multimedia, and other office equipment Sufficient hearing and speaking skills to project voice and communicate with staff and children in classroom settings and one‑on‑one conversations Perceiving the nature of sound, near and far visual acuity, depth perception imparting oral information, the manual dexterity to operate business‑related equipment, and manipulate various materials and objects are important aspects of this job Emergency Requirements Pursuant to California Government Code Section 3100, all public employees are required to serve as disaster service workers subject to such disaster service activities as may be assigned to them by their supervisor or by law. Qualified applicants, who meet the minimum qualifications, will participate in a written examination and technical oral interview, which will demonstrate the required knowledge and skill for this classification. The weight percentage of the examination and interview will be 50/50. Those applicants who receive a passing score on the written exam and oral interview will be placed on an Eligibility List. The top three ranks of candidates on the Eligibility List, who are ready, willing and able to accept the position, will be invited to the Final Selection Interview with the hiring authority. The eligibility list will be certified for a period of six months. It will be used to fill current and future permanent openings. Please include at least two (2) former supervisors in your references, as reference checks must be completed prior to any offer of employment. Employees working less than full‑time, but a minimum of four hours will contribute an amount proportionate to the number of assigned work hours for major medical insurance benefits. The District does not offer a package of insurance benefits to employees working less than four hours per day. The District provides life insurance for employees who work a minimum of 3 hours. In addition, the District offers a retirement plan which uses joint employee and employer contributions. Fingerprinting: Employees will be charged for processing their fingerprints at the time they are hired. The fingerprints are used to complete a confidential background investigation. All candidates with a record of convictions must indicate such on the confidential data form, which is attached to the job application. A record of conviction will not automatically disqualify an applicant from employment, but failure to list all convictions may result in disqualification or dismissal. Physical Examination: Newly hired employees must pass a qualifying Medical examination given by a District‑appointed physician, which includes testing for illegal controlled substances. Tuberculosis Exam: Newly hired employees must submit a Mantoux Skin screening and certificate of completion within the past 60 days that indicates freedom from active tuberculosis. Immigration Reform and Control Act Of 1986: An Eligibility Verification Form (I‑9) will be required along with the supporting documents listed on the I‑9 form.
