Job Description Ward 86, a renowned HIV Primary Care Clinic at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, is actively seeking a compassionate and highly motivated individual to join our team as a Hospital Assistant. Under the supervision of the Practice Manager and in collaboration with our wonderful team of medical providers, nurses, and other health care professionals, you will play a crucial role in delivering care to patients at Ward 86 and affiliated clinical programs. Collaborating closely with clinical team members, you will actively contribute to the care of individuals living with HIV, people experiencing homelessness, people who use substances, and individuals with high psychosocial complexity. As a Hospital Assistant, you will optimize clinic flow and contribute to creating a patient-centered environment that addresses the unique needs of our diverse patient population. Your responsibilities will encompass both clinical and clerical duties, ensuring optimal care outcomes and supporting various functions across clinical programs. Your role on the care team will be instrumental, encompassing tasks such as conducting patient vitalization, blood and specimen collection and processing, performing health screenings, obtaining patient demographic information, assisting with patient flow, maintaining exam rooms, checking equipment for proper functioning, administering vaccinations, conducting inventory checks, and maintaining accurate records. Additionally, you may be involved in transporting patients and specimens between different areas on the ZSFG Campus. Department Description Ward 86, the HIV/AIDS Clinic at the Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center (ZSFG) campus, has been a leader and innovator in the field of HIV care since the beginning of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Ward 86 is the largest clinic providing primary medical care for people living with HIV in the San Francisco Health Network (SFHN) and also provides preventive services to patients at risk for HIV infection, including pre‑exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). Ward 86 provides care to approximately 2400 patients living with HIV, with over 22,000 clinical encounters a year. Services are offered through a comprehensive, multi‑disciplinary approach, addressing primary medical and HIV care, urgent care, mental health evaluation and treatment, substance use assessment, treatment and referrals, HIV prevention services, and HIV specialty care needs. Responsibilities Obtain vital signs on patients, including height and weight, blood pressure, pulse, temperature, pulse oximetry, and respiratory rate, and enter into Epic electronic medical record system. Conduct various health screenings and enter data into Epic. Obtain demographic information and enter into Epic. Prep clinic exam rooms before, during, and after clinic sessions. Assist with patient flow during clinic hours, room patients, and monitor waiting room. Transport patients and specimens from clinic to locations within the hospital campus as directed. Conduct outreach phone calls as directed. Administer vaccinations as directed by Registered Nurses and/or Medical Providers and according to hospital policy. Prepare (scrub) patient charts in Epic and identify outstanding health care maintenance items prior to patient visits. React to identified health care maintenance gaps according to protocol and close out items. Set up equipment and supplies prior to each specialty care session as per the needs of each specialty clinic (including Anal Dysplasia, Gynecology, Infectious Disease, Pulmonology, Cardiology, Golden Compass, and other specialty clinics). Clean up and stow away equipment and supplies after each specialty care session. Assist with patient flow during specialty care clinic hours, room patients, and monitor waiting room. Assist Medical Providers as needed. Drop off and pick up equipment to/from sterility department according to schedule; maintain log of delivered/received equipment. Obtain specimens for medical workups (blood, stool, urine, saliva, mucosal samples) according to policies. Perform venipuncture according to hospital policy; instruct patients about self‑collection of specimens. Follow hospital policies when collecting, receiving, and handling specimens. Adhere to specimen tube and volume requirements; ensure proper labeling. Use established venipuncture procedures including site identification and preparation. Collect appropriate specimens for blood culture including AFB, fungal or viral analysis. Use safety collection devices and adhere to health and safety requirements. Process resistance testing and prepare necessary paperwork. Maintain laboratory equipment; ensure adequate stock of supplies; perform inventory checks according to schedule. Maintain daily lab activity logs, specimen‑banking logs, send‑out logs, and computer databases for clinical and research activities. Ensure all STAT/routine specimens are picked up and delivered to laboratories in a timely manner; transport stat labs as directed. Perform point of care testing per hospital policy; maintain daily point of care testing calibration. Maintain annual certification for point of care testing. Restock and maintain exam rooms during clinic hours, including restocking supplies, checking equipment functionality, notifying charge nurse about faulty equipment, changing soiled linen bags. Monitor and work Epic work queues, pools, and other primary care related items; follow up on medical orders; monitor fax queue; prepare orders for wet or electronic signature; perform other administrative functions as assigned. Take inventory, fill out requisitions, re‑stock shelves and rooms with supplies on an ongoing basis and according to schedule. Keep clinic tidy, including exam rooms, waiting rooms, hallways, and lab; notify porters if cleanup or trash removal needed. Maintain list of supplies needed; identify low stock; order supplies as directed; keep log of orders and deliveries. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications High School graduation and three years of appropriate experience, including one year of supervisory experience where applicable; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification or obtaining BLS Certification within 3 months of hire. Excellent phlebotomy skills. Well organized and detail oriented; able to set priorities and follow through on assigned tasks. Knowledge of medical terminology appropriate to job responsibilities. Basic mathematical/computational skills. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in a busy, team‑oriented environment. Ability to push/pull 50 lbs or greater while performing patient transport (wheelchair) within ZSFG Campus. Preferred Qualifications 2+ years of experience working as a Medical Assistant. Graduation from a Medical Assistant Program. Prior experience working in a primary care setting. Experience working with patients living with HIV/AIDS. Fluency in Spanish, ability to communicate effectively with mono‑lingual patients. Familiar with electronic health record systems, Microsoft Word, and Excel. Required Certifications Active and verifiable California Phlebotomy Technician Certification (CPT‑1).
